I was eleven years and maria would have been seven years. mama says papa owed Don Antonio money that he had to pay with his life and that of maria. It all happened one night he had gamble at Don Antonio's and lost lot of money, he didn't tell mama what happened that night, all he said was that we had to move to somewhere far were no one can find us that we had to travel very light and fast at most by the dusk tomorrow we had leave all four of us, mama kept asking him what had happened that maybe we could fix it together papa kept silent and when he spoke all he could say to her was " you should go prepare the kids for bed Rosa and one more thing you can't tell anyone you are moving not even your bad or sister I don't want them sticking their nose in my business " each word he spoke were filled with bitterness and he's voice cracked like that of a toad. Mama knew that he has gone back to his old ways of drinking, gambling and womanising, " what have you done Miguel " mama shouted " who's bar have you gone to, how much is it" after waiting awaiting away with no answer from dad she asked again but with a low voice " did you sleep with someone wife, which girl is it tell me " as she spoke I could see tears running down her checks, and then she finally spoke again after taking a deep breath " talk to me Miguel we could as father for help" but before those words would leave her mouth papa voice come up loud causing maria and i to jitter in fear " didn't I say you can't speak to anyone about this" with that he walk away and left mama crying voice in silent, after much silent I heard papa voice " boy take your sister upstairs and get her ready for bed" I took maria so we could have a bath and we both lay in our bed with our eyes open looking in a dark room in silent till we fall asleep.
