“We’ll have to make a move soon if we want to be ready in time for the jazz club,” Cliff told us when Sam and I had shot down the slide for the sixth or seventh time.

Sam groaned, but I was less bothered. Repeatedly climbing those steps was beginning to wind me.

We showered, then changed back into shorts and T-shirts before piling back into the car. This time Sam had gotten himself into the front passenger’s seat.

“Thanks for taking us, Tom. It was fantastic!” Sam gushed.

“That’s all right, little mate,” Tom said as he mussed up Sam’s hair. “I enjoyed it, too. I haven’t done anything like that in ages.”

When we got back to the apartment, I told Sam he should put on his long trousers and a dress shirt. He took the items from our wardrobe and went into the bathroom to change.

“It feels funny wearing long pants again,” he said once he’d emerged.
