Chapter 49

I attempted to sing about mad dogs and Englishmen going out in the midday sun.

“I wouldn’t give up the library if I were you,” Sam giggled.

“Shall we go for a look round now we’re out?” I suggested, ignoring Sam’s critique of my singing abilities.

“What’s that stone tower thing for?” Sam asked.

“Bonfires would be lit on it to warn of invasions and the like,” I said, having read up about such things before we left. I chose not to admit how I’d learned this fact however. I was teased enough by the other two about my bookishness as it was.

“Was the island invaded much?” Sam asked, staring at the tower. I hoped he didn’t want to climb it.

“Quite a few times,” I admitted. “We, the British I mean, invaded. In fact Menorca was once governed by us.”

“You seem to know a lot about it,” Mark said.

“Uh…” I hesitated.
