Still, when Deidre passed the sign that read STAGE ?, Gerry stopped. He lay a palm on his chest and blew out a long breath. Up there, that close, seemed like it would almost be tooclose. The music was loud enough to be distracting, reverberating through the floor and the walls, and forcing his heart to beat so hard that he could feel in his guts. Gerry was sure if one more ounce of tension dropped on his shoulders from anywhere, he’d just crumple into a ball on the floor and die.
Deidre nodded as though in question, Gerry nodded back in an attempt of assurance, and they both began to ascend a short set of stairs.
