Chapter 37 - Meeting the crew

Just as I walk through the door, I stumble across Mike cleaning one of the guns. As soon as the man noticed me he yelped in shock, before falling down to the ground.

"Holy cow, young man, you almost gave me a heart attack."

"Good to see you too. The boys told me that you guys met the legion here out of all of the places they could have been walking to."

"Yeah, some fool that thought he was some big shot demanded our freedom in exchange for a chance to serve the great Caesar or something like that. When he saw that we weren't going to believe his bullshit, he shouted something and his bodyguards attacked us. We quickly took them out from a distance shocking the idiot. Once he saw that his dogs were killed he tried to turn away, sadly for him, I wasn't going to risk exposing this place, especially after how much trouble you went to earn our pardon from the NCR. In the end, we killed all of them, took their weapons, and threw the bodies to the coyotes."

Usually, the legion group sent so deep into NCR territory doesn't have someone like that with them, but considering that they had the guts to raze Nipton, then maybe Caesar is stupid enough to send his ass-kisser out in the field just so that he could get rid of them.

"To tell you the truth Mike, I don't like this incident, something is missing from this attack, and that something will one day bite us in the ass."

"Tell me about it, boss, even for us who lived with addicts, this kind of fight seemed strange as hell. Thought I wonder if the legion sent those guys to scout the area, after all, one of the boys that I've sent as a scout did see smoke down the rails."

"Nipton, yeah the legion razed the place and killed most of the folks."

"A pity, we could have used the help of those folks, the thought doesn't that mean that we could take a trip there and borrow some stuff for ourselves?"

Now, this was something I didn't consider, mostly due to my rather good relationship with the NCR. Besides, it would be a pity to destroy that relationship for a few pieces of metal and wood or god knows what Mike and his crew take from Nipton. Maybe if I ask Knight for permission to take things from the city, then there might not be any problems between us, of course, if the major accepts.

"Until I talk with the NCR about this, I forbid you guys from borrowing stuff from Nipton. Not because I don't trust you guys, but because I don't know how the NCR will react if they find out that we are the ones stealing pieces of Nipton. Frankly, I'd rather not face the NCR, especially when we are on good terms with them."

For a second I could swear I saw Mike's eyes open wide before his eyes return to their normal stance, making me both confused and intrigued about this reaction.

"If you say so, boss. Anyways, we did some repairs around the station and by some stroke of luck, the handcar might be usable after we fix its wheelset. The only problem that we may face once we have a functional handcar, would be the rails themselves. Since it's been decades since someone used them for the purpose they were built. Then again if we continue to expand our area of operations…then one day we might be able to cover the whole Mojave with our handcar or even trains if we ever find one that can be repaired."

"Talk about plans for the future."

Right when Mike was about to comment on my words, the two guards that were outside of the station yelled out for help, making everyone other than me grab a weapon. Considering that I've signaled Vito and Beagle that everything was all right with these guys, I take it this was their first meeting with a super mutant.

I quickly follow Mike and the crew outside and as I thought, all of them were aiming their rifles and pistols at Vito, completely ignoring Beagle and even ED-E, who was hovering beside them. Rather than being intimidated by the amount of firepower aimed at him, Vito simply laughs at those guys, finding the whole situation funny.

"This must be the only time I've seen so many idiots aiming their guns at me and still shitting their pants in fear. Look lads, I'm not here to fight." He then glances over at me finally understanding that I might have forgotten to mention to all of them that he was going to be there. "I take it our mutual friend, Dante hadn't mentioned anything about me didn't he?"

When they heard Vito's words, all of the ex-convicts, minus the two guards who turned away looked at me as if I just grew a second head. "My bad, I forgot."

Once the whole thing was resolved, Mike, Vito, and Beagle shook hands introducing each other thus the three big shots of our group met for the first time.

Meanwhile, a hundred or so kilometers away from the station, a man wearing the infamous armor of the legion stood in front of what his peers would call heresy, but for him and a few others, the thing he was praying to was their true god.

As the man was praying, a woman walk into his tent, forcing the man to turn towards her.

"I have spoken to him. The good news is that Vulpes' loyal dogs were taken out. The bad news is that our target has some rather strong bonds with the NCR."

"That does complicate our plans indeed, but when was it easy for us? Our reckon our current troops could take the false prophet out?"

"They have us outnumbered a hundred to one. How do you even think we could face them with our current forces?"

"Maybe you are right my love, but once the avatar is restored, our army would grow, and with our influence over the Mojave and all over this false prophet that leads all of those innocent soldiers to a pointless war."

"And yet you still follow him like a good and loyal dog. That I do my love, that I do, but that's the only way we can be together, after all, his ideology doesn't accept you nor your people."
