Ethereal Genesis Online: Black Jade

Jada Blackburn just graduated from high school with her girlfriend Ember. She had planned on spending the summer doing nothing but laze around and play the new VRMMORPG her dad helped develop. But no, she will be spending her next 10 years stuck in said game with her childhood sweetheart/girlfriend, reluctantly (on her part) climbing the stupid 100 floor tower in hopes of defeating the stupid Final boss. And for some reason the other players are calling her and Ember the "Yandere Couple." What does that even mean?!

It's Alive

The group pressed on through the dense forest, the shadows growing deeper with every step. The encounter with the mysterious figure had shaken them, but it had also steeled their resolve. They moved in silence, their senses heightened, each of them aware that the danger was far from over.

Jada kept close to Ember, her mind racing with thoughts of the battle they had just fought. The power she had unleashed had been greater than anything she had ever experienced before, but it had also been frightening. She could feel the dark energy still coursing through her veins, a constant reminder of the cost of using such power.

"Are you okay?" Ember asked quietly, her tangerine eyes full of concern.

Jada nodded, forcing a small smile. "I'm fine. Just… trying to wrap my head around everything."

Ember squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You were amazing back there. We couldn't have done it without you."

Jada's smile grew a little more genuine at Ember's words. She knew her girlfriend meant every word, but there was still a nagging doubt in the back of her mind. The power she wielded was dangerous, and she wasn't sure how much longer she could control it.

The path ahead wound through a thick grove of ancient trees, their branches twisted and gnarled, forming a canopy that blocked out most of the light. The air was cool and damp, the scent of earth and moss heavy in the air. It was eerily quiet, the only sound the soft rustle of leaves as the wind whispered through the trees.

Kael, who had been leading the group, suddenly came to a halt, his eyes scanning the grove with suspicion. "Something's not right," he murmured, his hand going to the hilt of his sword.

The rest of the group tensed, their eyes darting nervously between the trees. Jada could feel it too—the sense of unease that had been building since they entered the grove. There was something here, something hidden in the shadows, watching them.

"Stay close," Kael ordered, his voice low. "We're not alone."

They moved forward cautiously, their eyes and ears alert for any sign of danger. The grove seemed to close in around them, the trees pressing closer together, their twisted branches forming an almost impenetrable wall.

Jada's heart pounded in her chest as they moved deeper into the grove. Every instinct told her to turn back, to leave this place behind, but she knew they couldn't afford to do that. The tower was their only way out, and they had to keep moving forward.

As they rounded a bend in the path, the trees suddenly opened up into a small clearing. In the center of the clearing stood a massive stone altar, its surface covered in strange, glowing runes. The air around the altar was thick with magic, the energy crackling like electricity in the air.

"What is this place?" Ember whispered, her voice filled with awe.

Kael approached the altar cautiously, his eyes scanning the runes. "It's some kind of shrine. I've seen something like this before in the beta, but nothing quite like this."

Jada stepped closer, her eyes drawn to the glowing runes. There was something familiar about them, something that tugged at the edges of her memory. She reached out, her fingers brushing against the cold stone, and the runes flared to life, bathing the clearing in a bright, ethereal light.

The ground beneath them trembled, and a deep, resonant hum filled the air. The runes on the altar pulsed with light, the energy within them growing stronger with each passing second.

"Jada, what did you do?" Ember asked, her voice tinged with fear.

Before Jada could answer, the air around the altar shimmered, and a figure began to materialize before them. It was a woman, tall and regal, her form composed of shimmering light. Her eyes were glowing orbs of energy, and her long hair floated around her like a halo.

"Who dares to disturb the sanctuary of the Ancients?" the figure demanded, her voice echoing through the clearing.

The group recoiled in shock, their weapons at the ready. Kael stepped forward, his sword drawn, but the figure raised a hand, and a wave of energy sent him stumbling back.

"Who are you?" Jada asked, her voice trembling. "What do you want?"

The figure's glowing eyes fixed on Jada, and she felt a chill run down her spine. "I am the Guardian of this shrine, the keeper of the knowledge of the Ancients. You have awakened me from my slumber. Why have you come here?"

Jada hesitated, her mind racing. She could feel the immense power radiating from the Guardian, and she knew they were in no position to fight her. But there was something else—something in the way the Guardian looked at her, as if she recognized her.

"We didn't mean to disturb you," Jada said carefully. "We're just trying to find our way to the tower."

The Guardian's expression softened slightly, and she studied Jada for a long moment. "The tower… yes, the tower is the key to your escape. But the path you walk is fraught with danger. Many have tried to reach the summit, but few have succeeded."

Jada nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. "We know. But we don't have a choice."

The Guardian seemed to consider this, her glowing eyes narrowing. "You possess great power, young sorceress. But be warned—power alone is not enough to conquer the trials that lie ahead. You must be strong of heart and mind if you are to survive."

Jada swallowed hard, the weight of the Guardian's words pressing down on her. She knew the Guardian was right—she had to be careful, had to stay in control. But she also knew that they couldn't turn back now.

"What do we need to do?" Jada asked, her voice steady.

The Guardian gestured to the altar, the runes glowing brighter in response. "This shrine contains the knowledge of the Ancients, the secrets that will guide you on your journey. But the knowledge comes at a price. Are you willing to pay it?"

Jada exchanged a glance with Ember, who nodded in support. "We'll do whatever it takes," Jada said, her voice firm.

The Guardian's eyes flared with light, and she nodded. "Very well. Approach the altar, and receive the blessing of the Ancients. But be warned—the knowledge you seek may change you in ways you cannot foresee."

Jada stepped forward, her heart racing. She could feel the energy radiating from the altar, could hear the hum of power growing louder in her ears. She reached out, her fingers brushing against the glowing runes, and a surge of energy coursed through her, flooding her mind with visions.

She saw the tower, its spire reaching up into the sky, its dark presence looming over the land. She saw the trials that awaited them—the monsters, the traps, the illusions designed to break them. She saw the faces of those who had tried and failed before them, their spirits trapped in the shadow of the tower.

And then she saw something else—something darker, something that made her blood run cold. A figure, shrouded in darkness, its eyes glowing with an unnatural light. It was waiting for them at the summit, waiting to claim their souls.

The visions faded, and Jada stumbled back, gasping for breath. Her mind was reeling, the weight of the knowledge pressing down on her like a physical force.

"Jada!" Ember was at her side, her eyes filled with concern. "What did you see?"

Jada shook her head, struggling to find her voice. "It's… it's worse than we thought. The tower… it's alive. And it's waiting for us."

The Guardian watched her with a solemn expression. "The path you walk is not an easy one. But you are strong, stronger than you know. Trust in your power, and in each other. Only then will you have a chance of reaching the summit."

Jada nodded, her resolve hardening. They had come too far to turn back now. They had to reach the tower, had to face whatever awaited them at the summit.

The Guardian raised a hand, and the runes on the altar flared with light. "Go now, and may the Ancients guide your steps."

The light grew brighter, and the world around them began to dissolve into a blinding whiteness. Jada felt a sense of weightlessness, as if she were floating through the air, and then everything went dark.

When she opened her eyes, they were standing at the edge of the grove, the shrine and the Guardian nowhere in sight. The forest was still and silent, the air thick with the scent of earth and moss.

Jada took a deep breath, her heart still pounding. The knowledge she had gained from the shrine was overwhelming, but it had also given her a sense of clarity, a sense of purpose. They had to reach the tower, had to face the darkness that awaited them.

And no matter what it took, they would survive.
