Chapter 13 Something to Discuss

Alayna scrutinized Lev's face, searching for any hints that would reveal if his suggestion of accompanying her to the office was a mere joke. Lev's mysterious smile seemed to hold a secret code, and she was eager to solve it.

In a soft voice, Alayna carefully chose her words. "That's unexpected. Usually, you prefer going alone," she murmured, attempting to conceal her curiosity. However, her eyes remained alert, capturing every slight expression that could offer insight into the change in Lev's demeanor. "Is there something you're planning?" she cautiously inquired.

Lev responded with a dismissive tone, his words dripping with disdain. "I do have a plan," he sneered. "It's called going to work. What else? Come on, let's have breakfast and then head to the office."

Not wanting to prolong the issue, Alayna complied with Lev's request. She sat across from him at the pantry table, their eyes briefly locking. Within that fleeting connection brewed an undeniable sense of uncertainty.

Alayna could feel her heartbeat quicken as her gaze met Lev's. The tension between them was palpable, urging her to alleviate the unease by quietly consuming her breakfast.

Taking a bite of her tuna sandwich, Alayna chewed slowly, deep in thought. Meanwhile, Lev was occupied with his meal, yet he couldn't help but notice Alayna stealing occasional glances in his direction.

Once they finished breakfast, they made their way to the office. Lev donned his signature black suit, while Alayna opted for a simple yet elegant combination of a white shirt blouse, and black skirt. Side by side, they walked towards the car, accompanied by an unsettling silence that enveloped their every step.

The journey to the office unfolded in silence. Lev focused on the wheel, while Alayna fixated her gaze on the passing scenery outside the window, her thoughts flowing like a serene river.

The tranquil atmosphere was intermittently disrupted by the bustling sounds of traffic. Though few words were exchanged, an undercurrent of tension lingered in the air—a silent signal that something needed to be addressed.

Finally, at a red light, Alayna gathered her courage and took a deep breath, determined to break the silence.

"Lev," she called out firmly, capturing his attention with a piercing glare. "There's something I need to discuss."

Lev arched an eyebrow, displaying a blend of surprise and concern. "What is it?" he inquired.

Internally, Alayna felt a mounting unease, yet she resolved to remain courageous. She exhaled deeply before delivering her next words, her countenance grave and determined. "We can't keep living like this. It's detrimental to both of us."

Lev nodded, sensing that Alayna's sentiments mirrored his long-held thoughts. "I know," he concurred. "I feel the same way."

Gripping the steering wheel tightly, Lev kept his eyes fixed on the road ahead. "We need to confront what lies ahead. Pretending that everything is fine won't suffice," he asserted.

Taking another deep breath, Alayna felt the pressure in her chest gradually easing. "I agree. We must take proactive steps to initiate change."

Lev pondered for a brief moment, seemingly considering his words carefully. "I acknowledge how my personality may have impacted our relationship. Perhaps I've been too domineering, too controlling."

Alayna found herself taken aback by Lev's unexpected admission of his shortcomings.

"Speaking for myself, I may have kept my feelings bottled up for far too long," Alayna confessed in a sincere tone. "I often hesitate to reveal my true emotions, fearing your reaction."

Lev nodded, seeming to be listening intently. "We need to learn to listen to and understand each other, Alayna. We need to create a space for honesty. At least, as roommates because we live in the same house."

"Roommates?"

For a moment, Alayna thought Lev had changed. However, she immediately realized that one's character could not be changed as easily as by flipping one's hands.

"Yes. I aim to rebuild this relationship not only for our well-being but also because I plan to venture into politics," Lev revealed.

Alayna stared at Lev in surprise, never expecting politics to be a part of their conversation.

"So?"

"Well, I've been considering a foray into politics, and I know that my reputation will be of paramount importance. I want to ensure that our relationship is properly maintained – no controversies or scandals that could tarnish my name," Lev explained.

"Does that mean we'll just continue pretending and faking things?" Alayna questioned, a hint of frustration creeping into her voice.

"If it becomes necessary, why not? I can compensate you more in return if you can manage this marriage well. Your family back home won't look down on you anymore, now that your status is higher than theirs," Lev proposed.

Alayna's fists clenched tightly as she struggled to contain her anxiety. Her contractual husband delved into the issue once again, her gaze distant as she stared out the window. It was a battle within her, torn between her ambition and trepidation, between proving herself and the fear of losing her own identity.

The vehicle continued on its course, its calm movement contrasting sharply with the turmoil raging within Alayna's mind. The scenery outside served merely as a blurred backdrop as she grappled with her indecision.

"So? What do you say?" Lev's hopeful voice broke the silence, seeking an answer.

It felt as if the words were stuck in Alayna's throat. She turned towards the man beside her, observing the resolute yet uncertain expression on his face. She could sense Lev's fervent determination to pursue his ambitions.

With a deep breath, Alayna finally responded, her voice heavy with emotion, "I believe we must find a way to stay true to ourselves, without pretending."

"That would be better," Lev agreed, though a trace of chilliness lingered beneath his words. "So, for the sake of my political aspirations, we must often be seen together."

Alayna nodded slowly, a newfound weight settling upon her shoulders. "Is that why you want us to go to the office together?"

A furrow formed on Lev's brow as he directed his gaze into the distance, contemplating each word he would utter. After a moment, he replied with conviction, "Precisely. Your presence will be a visual support to the image I wish to build. You know how crucial perception is in the world of politics."

Alayna bit her lower lip, feeling confused about the role she would play and worried about the complications that would come her way.
