Chapter 23

I feel weak. I feel pierced through by the arrows slung at me and though there’s no blood leaking from my wounds, I feel as weak and close to death as if there had been.

Brenton begins dressing in silence. His anger radiates out from him to fill the room. When finally he pulls on his socks and boots, he stands and walks towards the door.

“Don’t be here when I return,” he says without looking at me.

He opens the door and walks out.

“Thank you for everything,” I shout as the door slams shut.

I drop to the floor. My tears are at an end, but my soul feels wounded and weary. Only now do I consider the foolishness of my actions. What if I can’t find Eduardo? What if he’s returned to Brazil? What if I find him and he wants nothing to do with me?

I call reception.

“Could you book me a passage on any ferry, boat or ship to England?”

A voice at the other end replies, “Certainement, monsieur.”
