Chapter 22

Brenton and I have been sharing a room for two months. We decided it would be to our mutual benefit as rooms at the Hotel Regina aren’t cheap. That means I’ve been in Paris for almost four months in total.

One cloudy day, I find myself at the window. I’m sitting, looking down over the street below, at the various people going about their business. Brenton is still asleep. I’ve had so much fun in Paris. There was a stage when I thought I could live here permanently. I could easily afford a small apartment and a staff of one or two. But now all the fun and the sex are becoming mundane. I hate to say it, but it’s true. The constant crowds of people are depressing me and I long for the solitude of Hilldare Manor; for the simplicity of a rural lifestyle—if only to take a breather from the whirl of Parisian life.
