Upon seeing Sherman's face, Elaine was stunned beyond words.
She was certain it was a nightmare she didn't want to be in. Even though his eyes were gentle and warm, and even a bit imploring, emotions that seemed out of place for him, the distance between them felt insurmountable.
Jackman had stationed a heavily guarded patrol, making it almost impossible for anyone to enter the estate.
Elaine would often wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of their orderly footsteps. But now, Sherman had appeared before her, and she preferred to believe it was just a terrible dream.
Elaine's body shook with fear.
"I'm not here to hurt you," Sherman said in a low voice, his tone even innocent.
Elaine had never seen him show such emotions before. She desperately needed to calm down to face this nightmare.
"I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong person," Elaine said, determined to start a new life and leave behind those dark years.
