You think it will never happen you think

A few years ago, after I graduated high school, my sister and I went out after dark to walk at the local high school track. We live in a very small town and never had reason to feel unsafe. In fact, we had walked there at night many times before. Sometimes other people would be walking or jogging, too. The whole track was fenced in and fairly well lit. We never had any reason to feel unsafe.

However, on that particular night, we first noticed something was off when several vehicles kept speeding past the track on the roads flanking it on one side. We thought they were just a bunch of dumb teenagers racing each other and ignored them as we kept walking.

At some point, however, they all parked alongside the track in the parking lot, which was separated from the track by a wide creek and some grass. It was distant enough that you couldn't be totally sure of the details you were making out. I remember that there were about 3 or 4 vehicles. One was a truck, one was a Jeep, and one was just some kind of generic-looking car. They all had their high beams shining on us. Then, they started honking their horns at us, as if they were trying to get our attention. We looked over, and they seemed to pause for a moment, but one of them kept honking. Thinking they were just being deliberately annoying, I flipped them off so we could go on with our walk.

However, that clearly set them off. They all started speeding, like pedal to the metal speeding, around the roads right outside the stadium. My sister and I kept walking, thinking that they would eventually go away, but several minutes passed and they just kept on. They kept honking their horns at each other, as well. This was the point where my sister and I started to get actually concerned. Nothing was stopping them from getting out of their vehicles and coming inside the fence where we were. In order to leave, we would have to exit the fence and go out into the parking lot, which was part of the area where they kept driving around. I was certain trying to exit the track was a bad idea, so I called my mom on the cellphone she and my stepdad shared.

At first, they didn't answer, and my sister and I started to get very anxious. However, after we called a few times, they finally did. They clean offices in the evenings, so they were probably vacuuming when we started calling. Sometimes, they forget to take their phone into the office with them. I'm just thankful this wasn't one of those nights. We told them what was happening and that we didn't know how to safely leave the track. Of course, they said they would come down there immediately. The only problem was that they were at least 30 minutes away.

We sat and waited on the metal bleachers inside the fence, which faced away from where they kept driving around. At some point, I noticed that two of them pulled up beside each other for a moment, presumably to talk. I had no idea what they were talking about, but I knew it was nothing good.

Finally, my parents arrived and walked into the track to escort us out safely. At this point, the vehicles were still hanging around and didn't flee at the first sign of someone else. They kept driving around, and when my sister and I went out and got in my car, the generic-looking car paused in the parking lot. As I was pulling out, he tried to tailgate me out of the parking lot, presumably to follow us home. My stepdad quickly pulled his van up behind my car and stayed close until we drove away from the high school and the cars stopped following us. They didn't go far from the school and left us alone after we got to the nearby intersection. After that, my sister and I never went back to that track to walk after dark, and we were a lot more cautious about being out at night. I am thankful that they never decided to get out of their vehicles and confront us in person, and I shudder to think what their true intentions were for us.
