He paced a bit more, then seemed to suddenly discover himself bare-assed. He holstered the pistol and dressed, so I got up and did the same.

“Where you headed?” I asked as we mounted up.

“Devil’s Paw. Where else?”

I had not expected this, but when I tried to see what I had expected, I found nothing. I’d not gotten beyond Frank. “You’d go back there?”

“Best hideout ever.”

I couldn’t argue, so I shut up and we went along, absent any road, which kept it slow. We avoided the flats when we could, seeking wooded or rocky parts. When forced into the open, we rode hard until cover came again. Then night was upon us and we went back across the river, headed for Devil’s Paw.

What surprised me was Frank stopping in town. “I want to get drunk,” he said as he pulled up at the first saloon. He didn’t wait on comment, just hopped down and went in.
