DEATH'S OWN

Born with an unusual birthmark, the shape of a skeleton’s head with rose patterns round about it on her neck, many believed she would only bring bad luck to those around her. This belief was solidified when two of her suitors died unexpectedly right after a visit to her home. Such a thing should come as a bother to any woman but the same could not be said about Nyx. She didn't care if the beliefs about her were true or false. She never liked any of her suitors. Her heart had always been longing for a certain man whom she was very familiar with in her childhood but ceased to appear before her the moment she entered adolescence. Since she knew him one thing was very certain about him, he was not human since he never aged. Not even once. Believing he would one day come again, Nyx was prepared to wait until the day they would meet again. But not everything goes as planned. Having a sickly mother whose only wish was to see her daughter get married and an influential suitor who didn't mind the deaths around her, Nyx soon found herself married off and her mother passed away leaving a father who dreaded her existence and a husband she never loved. **** From a distance he watched her grow, keeping his distance from her, staying within the shadows. As she aged slowly into adulthood, the mark on her neck became more prominent and so was her scent. He wanted her to grow, but when she finally came of age, he thought she would be better without him. But as time wore on and other men began to show interest in her, he could not hold back nor could he let them have her. He discarded those who had an interest in her but one of them slipped through his fingers while he was away and took her. He waited to see if she was happy with her life, with that man, if she was, then he would let her be. She would be able to live a happy life this time unlike the previous one, but everything changed when the forces from the underworld learned of her existence and her connection with him. Her husband was killed which he permitted and her life was in constant danger. Keeping the distance was no longer an option and he once again appeared before her.

Her worries

Nyx took a deep breath to calm her nerves. This conversation was very much expected, but she didn't think he would bring it up like that. "I…." The words were just at the tip of her tongue, but they felt so difficult to utter.

But why? Nyx couldn't give a definite answer to this. Was her life so messed up that she couldn't make a decision? What was it that she wanted? She did not know anymore.

"It's fine. Take your time and do not rush into making your decisions," He stood up, pushed the seat back, and walked out of the dining room.

No matter how hard he tried to pretend that it didn't hurt, he knew it did. He also knew that he wouldn't always be able to keep it in. Right now, it was one of those times. She was his wife, and she should be his, but that was not the case here. She had agreed to stay married when he presented her with the chance to leave, but she still wouldn't draw close to him or allow him to do that.

Nyx bit her tongue when he stood up and turned his back to her. She understood how he felt and her heart ached for him but she felt it was wrong and she was cheating on someone else and at the same time, she would also be creating him of his rights as her husband.

"Skye, wait," she called before he could exit the dining room. Skye stopped and slowly turned to look at her while she stood up and approached him. "I would love to," she uttered. Their eyes locked, and for a moment, it felt as if time had stopped.

"Nyx, listen…" Skye broke the silence, but he was interrupted by Nyx.

"I am certain about what I am doing. None of us asked to be in this predicament. Since we already, we might as well go through it all," her beat escalated with every word that she uttered, but luckily, she was still able to say her piece.

After a long pause, Skye nodded his head. "All right then," his heart and body felt light at that very moment. He didn't know how to express it, and neither did he want to look too excited about it and give her the wrong idea, but the way his face brightened up immediately was hard to miss. "We can leave whenever you are ready," he uttered with a soft smile.

Nyx gave him a nod before she returned to the dinner that she doubted she would touch again while he left with a phone in his ear. It was obvious that he was making plans now.

Sitting down, she stared at her palms, clenched and unbleached them many times, but she still didn't know what she was looking to get out of it. Her thoughts drifted to Reaper, who she was certain would know if anything happened between them. What would he do? Would he react, or would he just grow more distant? If he were to react and take action, what would he do? Would Skye be harmed?

"Madam," Irene called. She had walked in and stood there with a bow for a while, yet she was not noticed. She should have just picked up the dishes and left but she couldn't leave the young woman like that when it looked like she required a mother's advice.

Nyx looked up, startled by the sudden voice beside her. She sighed and took a deep breath when she saw who it was. "Sorry about that," she apologized, but the woman gave her an understanding smile.

"It is alright. But you look troubled, is something the matter?" She was the exact opposite of the master when he walked out of the dining room. Irene had thought everything was good between the two, but she was surprised to walk in and meet Nyx like that. She looked like she had the world's problems on her shoulders, and they were heavily weighing on her mind. She didn't know whether to call Skye back inside the other day or just leave it be, so she decided to talk to Nyx instead.

"There is no need to worry about me, Irene, I am fine. My mind was just occupied," Nyx said. She has grown used to not sharing her thoughts and fears even while she lived with her parents. It was like that, and that is how it should be. No one would understand even if she shared them. Trusting people with her secrets was something she would never do. She trusted one person before she betrayed her. Even now, that person doesn't feel sorry at all and does not even consider what she did as a betrayal. If her friend could betray her like that, how much more a woman whom she had only known in a short time.

"I understand, Madam. But you should know that some problems are better shared with others for solutions to be found. You can't always expect to solve every problem alone. You will break at some point," Irene said. She smiled at her when Nyx did not utter a word and then proceeded to call a maid. She picked up the dishes and handed them to the maid who left as quietly as she had come.

"You and Master Morgan are still young, and your journey together has just begun. You have to look at the brighter side of everything. I understand that the marriage between you and Master Morgan was under some special conditions, couples like you two can still learn to relate and perhaps, one day fall in love with each other," Irene continued after the maid was gone.

Nyx offered a faint smile. Irene was right. Their marriage was under some special conditions. Even more special than anyone would ever imagine but at the end of the day, they were married. Everyone knew them as husband and wife. If he were to die today, she would be known as his widow. Whether she accepts it or not, that was the truth.

"Thank you, Irene. I needed that."
