Dark Mage: Hidden Genius

"These people think, that after everything they've done, after all that I've suffered through, that I'm willing to forgive and forget, just like that? No. I'll put on a smile and play nice for now, but when I get a chance? A chance to destroy all of you? I'll take it." ****** (WPC FEB 2024 Entry) Zane Syne grew up lonely and in poverty, persecuted by those around him. He used to live a happy life with his parents, until they were captured and publicly executed for being Dark Mages shortly after his 6th birthday. Zane begged on the streets for 12 years, up until his 18th birthday, where he discovered the gifts his parents left behind for him. Now awakened, armed with overpowered abilities such as forbidden dark magic, future-sight, and a seemingly infinite amount of mana, Zane will discover he is incredibly talented in magic. Enlisting in the Royal Academy for Mages, Zane will stay low-profile and hide among his peers as he takes the abuse and discrimination for being related to Dark Mages. Behind the scenes, however... Zane will slowly eat away at the kingdom of Magine, and everyone else that has caused him suffering. Hiding his darkness and acting weak, Zane will stay out of the spotlight until it's time for payback. What the world doesn't know yet.... Is that Zane Syne the Dark Mage is worse than whatever they thought his parents were. ****** The setting is a fantasy world with some modern-day elements, like clothes or other things. Please give the novel a chance before dropping! ps. The cover art is not mine, I do not own it.

ROOMMATES! (Does It Matter If They Aren't Approved?)

"My own room…"

Zane sat up from his bed and stretched his arms. He had immediately gone to sleep after Leo dropped him off at his room the night before.

"That was the first good night's sleep I've had in years…"

Zane got up and fixed his bed before washing up, his spellbook floating behind him. It bobbed up and down, seemingly also excited by the new room.

"What should I have for breakfast…" Stepping out of the shower, Zane looked around before realizing he had no appliances.

"Oh, right!"

Picking an empty spot on the side of the room, Zane pointed a finger at it.

"Release From Storage!"

At the spot where he pointed, a massive wooden chest appeared, landing on the ground with a thud.

"Forgot I had dad's chest in my Storage spell." Zane patted the chest. "Can I have a hearty breakfast?"

After eating a tasty meal, Zane sat down at the table, unsure how to spend his day.

"Leo said I was a Mage now… but what does that mean? No one told me anything!"

******

In a cafeteria somewhere in the academy, Lanius and Lisa were having breakfast.

"This stuff is what Mages get to eat everyday?" Lanius looked at the pile of food on his plate. "I'm so happy we made it in!"

"If they didn't give us access to good food, I would've quit immediately." Lisa bit into a piece of bacon.

"We get like a week of grace time before the real Mage stuff starts, right?" Lanius asked as he began to devour his meal. "That's what the announcement board outside the dormitory said."

"No, we get up to a week of grace time while they split all of us into squads and assign masters. We could get picked up by today for all we know."

"Then I shall make the most of this while we don't have to work yet." Standing up with an empty plate, Lanius left to get seconds.

Lisa massaged her forehead as she saw Lanius fight with others over food in the distance.

******

"Well, I got nothing to do…" Zane was sprawled on his bed, bored out of his mind.

"Wait! I can test out some of THOSE spells I learned from dad!"

Zane got to his feet, his spellbook already in the air. He went to the middle of the room, crouched down, and began to channel his dark energy. (A/N: Dark energy or dark mana is pretty much like normal mana but is harmful and corruptive to non-dark magic related entities.)

He raised a finger, a black flame on it. Without Zane noticing, his purple right eye began to glow a little. He began to draw a wide circle on the ground, his finger the pen and the dark energy the ink. After completing the circle, Zane dispelled his dark energy and stepped back.

"First, a roommate." Zane smiled in anticipation, his spellbook buzzing. "Summon Shadow!"

Summon Shadow was a dark magic spell that summoned entities from the shadow dimension. Unlike with the Sacrifice to Shadow spell, the entity was not a servant to the caster, and would not disappear after one order. Zane had no clue what kind of shadow creature he was summoning, but he was excited to find out!

The lights in the room shut off, and the circle that Zane drew on the ground began to fill in its circumference with a murky dark liquid, almost like liquid shadow. Once the circle was filled in, it pulsed with dark mana. The portal was ready!

'Good thing I cast a bunch of spells on my room so that no one can hear nor feel anything from it unless they're inside.' Zane applauded himself in his mind.

Out from the portal on Zane's floor, a dark hand emerged, grabbing onto the floor. Zane was shaking in excitement. Slowly, a creature made of darkness pulled itself out of the portal, standing proud and tall.

"Woah…" Zane observed the tall shadow person that was now in his room, its head nearly touching the ceiling.

Since the new arrival was made of shadow, Zane couldn't really tell what it was meant to be. It was humanoid, that's for sure, but aside from that it was hard to tell. There were parts on its limbs that seemed thinner or thicker, like armor, and it had spiked shoulders, and what looked like a cape…

[I am a Deathrider.]

The creature suddenly spoke, surprising Zane. It had a masculine voice that was heavy and murky.

"Oh! You're a guy- I mean, you can speak! I'm Zane!" Zane stuck a hand out for the Deathrider to shake. The tall shadow looked around the room carefully before looking back down at Zane. Slowly, it accepted Zane's hand and shook it.

'Feels like jelly.' Zane thought upon feeling the Deathrider's hand.

"So, do you have a name?"

[...]

"...?"

[No I do not.]

"Oh, in that case… I'll call you Gunther. Is that alright with you?" Zane led him over to the table and offered him a seat. The Deathrider paused for a moment before nodding and accepting the seat.

[Gunther is acceptable.]

"Great! Now we need one more guest!"

Zane pulled out another chair from the Storage spell, placing it next to Gunther.

"Luckily, our next guest can bring his own portal!" Zane grabbed his spellbook. Back at his parents house, he had modified this spell a bit to better suit him. Now he could test it out!

Zane pointed a hand at the third chair while looking at his spellbook.

"Best Friend!"

Unlike when he summoned Gunther, this time the whole building shook, grabbing a lot of attention from the other people staying in the dorm as well as the ones outside.

"Whoops." Zane sweat a little.

Walking around the campus, Lanius and Lisa felt the shaking and looked at the dorm.

"This is a crazy earthquake!" Lanius exclaimed.

Back in Zane's room, a small pink crack appeared in the air above the chair, spitting out lightning. It began to open, revealing a neon green void behind it. It stretched for about a few meters before it stopped, and the sound of a massive creature moving could be heard from the void.

Zane smiled at the void behind the crack, with Gunther looking at it warily with the white dots he had for eyes. Behind the crack, something massive blocked their view of the void, moving until a yellow, reptilian eye appeared, switching its gaze between Gunther and Zane.

Seeing the giant eye in the crack, Zane spread his arms with joy.

"Cthulhu! Glad you could make it!"

If anyone else heard the name Zane just called the entity behind the crack, they would have immediately panicked and run away as far as they could.
