Fighting Goblins

Chapter 13 - Fighting Goblins

Bell's main goal at that moment was to break through Level 1. To get there, he needed to stack up experience, skills, and various ability values.

He wasn't sweating about his abilities growing too slowly. Even before getting Falna, his basic abilities had been improving pretty fast.

His strength and agility had increased so quickly that he had made it to Orario in less than a month.

Now that he had Falna, which boosted his progress even more, Bell was confident he'd get through Level 1 soon.

But he didn't want to draw too much attention during this process. That could have led to loads of trouble.

He wasn't overthinking it, though. At that moment, he wasn't in any immediate danger. The only thing he needed to be careful about was not getting caught using Spatial Pocket.

If word got out, it would spread across Orario like wildfire. It was important to stay low-key, but it was even more crucial not to look shady.

Being careful, not sneaky, was key. Bell had learned that if people saw you acting suspicious, even good folks would start keeping an eye on you.

Paying attention to the sounds around him, he picked up the pace as he moved deeper into the first floor. The noises started to sharpen.

When he was far enough from the entrance, Bell suddenly stopped. The once-clear footsteps around him got quieter, but there was still plenty of noise in his ears.

His hand, hidden under his cloak, gripped the short knife he had brought from home.

The sounds got closer, and when they were right behind him, Bell spun around without a second thought. Squinting, he spotted a small green goblin.

The goblin lunged at him with a weapon, but Bell dodged it easily.

At the same time, he slashed his dagger across the goblin's neck.

Blood sprayed from the goblin's neck. For goblins, getting slashed by a normal person was just as deadly.

The goblin, fatally wounded, quickly disintegrated into a cloud of black ash, sinking into the dungeon walls.

"So that's how it worked," he thought. "Monsters in the dungeon died from fatal damage, turned into black ash, and got sucked back into the dungeon. Then they spawned as new monsters. This cycle is some kind of special dungeon ability."

Bell spotted a dagger and a small magic stone on the ground, dropped by the goblin.

The magic stone made sense, but why the dagger?

Monsters got their weapons when they were spawned in the dungeon; it was part of them. Normally, it turned into black ash too and disappeared after the monster was killed.

"Looks like I got lucky," he mused.

Bell walked over, and as his cloak hid it, he quickly put the dagger in Spatial Pocket.

Then he pulled it out and checked it. Knocking it against the knife he had brought, he noticed a gap on his knife, while the dagger remained intact.

"Damn, the difference in quality is pretty clear," Bell thought. "The goblins on the first floor carry some sharp daggers. But do goblin drops occur quite often?"

He doubted it for a second, but then shrugged it off. Whether it was easy to drop or not didn't matter.

As for whether goblin fangs dropped easily, he'd find out by killing more.

Bell took a moment to calm down.

The thrill of killing a monster for the first time had pushed down his fear of the unknown.

Bell wasn't someone who handled fear well, especially with horror movies and all that. What he needed was to adapt, but he was already out of time to adjust.

The footsteps in his ears started picking up again. The sound was controlled, not too loud—probably another goblin.

Bell focused on steadying his breathing, letting his body adapt to the situation. His hand, holding the dagger, no longer trembled with fear. His breathing evened out.

In the wild, your stamina was everything. The same went for dungeons, where strength and energy were your lifelines.

If you didn't know your limits, you'd end up dead.

Four or five goblins were hiding in the nearby shadows, in corners almost invisible to the human eye.

Luckily, Bell was used to the dark and could see clearly. This gave him a good look at the goblins.

They had dark green skin, skinny bodies, sharp ears, and nasty expressions. Their slightly curved daggers, held in reverse grips, gleamed with a cold light, showing just how dangerous they were.

"Four... no, five," he counted.

Bell stayed calm. Even though this was his first real fight, his body quickly got into a fighting stance. He didn't know why, but he was adapting fast.

He was also super focused. Bell noted that the five goblins were spread out enough that he could handle them one-on-one, but getting surrounded was another story.

"So, I'd need to use the Spatial Pocket," he decided. "Using what I've stored there would definitely make these fights easier."

"I was pretty far from the entrance on the first floor," he thought. "Even a rookie wouldn't come this deep. So, my actions here wouldn't draw much attention."

Bell had made up his mind before. Besides honing his skills, he was going to test out how to use the Spatial Pocket in combat.
