The people heard the crying coming from one of the piers and they stayed far away from it. Hearing wailing coming from near the water was a big cause for concern.
The superstitious citizens knew that a wailing woman was always a bad omen, especially near the water. Even the worst criminals and the drunkest idiots wouldn't have got near that, but one person was either braver or stupider than the rest.
A gentleman in a well-maintained high-quality suit walked towards the sound of a woman's crying without care.
From farther away it was hard to make out, but his face held no fear, only a bit of anxiety and a lot of worry.
The people walking near the Harbor just thought him a dumbass and moved on. In their books they had already written him down as a dead man.
But the man walking wasn't an ordinary man, and the woman crying wasn't a supernatural horror, just a really sad person.
The sky was clear of clouds a rare occasion in these mid autumn days. The moon wasn't full, it was currently waning, close to her death as the new moon, and resurrection as she starts to gain size again.
Veronica stared at it with teary eyes. The remnant part of a larger disk in the sky, that moon wasn't hers, and at the same time it was. The moon that Earth had had a lot more larger craters, this one seemed younger somehow.
It was also bigger, or at least looked bigger since she had no idea about the celestial size of either this planet or its moon. It also glowed with a deep blueness, unlike the usual pure white of Earth's moon.
Staring at it made her inexplicably sad. She had spent two life staring at two different moons, and currently neither looked familiar.
How can a person who's from two worlds, living a life in each, and somehow still be without one to she could call her own.
She spent close to the same time living on both of worlds, 21 years. She was 21 years old when she died back on Earth and reborn here on this nameless planet. She was 12 years old, when her parents died, then when she became 21 again, she died again.
By her count this current family, the Miles family, it was her fourth one. She didn't even know what happened to her third.
She spent 8 years with them, living a happy and lush life, just like she dream of on that faithful night, when her second family died.
Her third parents were nice as well. They didn't spend that much time together, since both worked very hard on their carriers, but they were loving and caring. Veronica truly hoped that He had done nothing with them, she hoped they just thought she ran away or something.
There was no reason for her to go back there anyway. Her face and body had drastically changed, and the only mark of her previous self was the eyes that were watery and stared at the large blue moon.
She heard the footsteps behind her, but she didn't move. Veronica sat on the pier, her feet dangling off the edge. The water was a few meters below her, it was currently low tide, which brought the sea level down a meter or two.
It was strange to think about it, since the moon was either bigger or closer, it affected the tides much more. The differences were quite drastic compared to Earth, and they had to dug really deep in the Harbor so the bottom of the ships wouldn't get damaged.
The sound of a set of boots approaching got pretty close before it suddenly halted. Veronica still stared at the moon as she spoke in a scratchy voice.
"I'm sorry I left... I just couldn't handle hearing all that about my brother..."
The footsteps sounded again, until they stopped next to her. Michael sat down on the pier as well, his feet dangling off. Their hands were nearly touching, but neither noticed.
Michael stared at the waning moon, but only spoke after a few minutes of silence.
"Don't need to say sorry. I understand, and I'm sorry to start the argument. It was dumb and I should've dropped it..." He sounded kind and tender, which melted Veronica's sad little cold heart a bit.
A small breeze brushed past them, and as it played with Veronica's hair she turned towards the water. There she watched as the reflection of the moon got broken up periodically by waves.
"What did the others think? Did they ask questions about my abrupt departure?" Her voice didn't sound that broken, which ignited a bit of hope in Michael.
"No they didn't. They just assumed that you freaked out because of the recent trauma, and the argument. They actually sent me after you, even though I would've come on my own." He spoke with a small smile.
Veronica finally turned towards him with a curious expression, this was something she didn't expect.
"Really? I thought Suze would be the one to come... She is very protective of her family if you hadn't noticed yet." She said, while trying to force out a small smile.
Michael giggled next to her, and 'accidentally' moved his hand so it would be placed right on top of hers. She didn't pull hers away, so Michael decided to keep his own there.
He looked into her eyes. They were red rimmed and puffy from all the crying, but they weren't as sad as before. As the moonlight shined upon Veronica's face and as the wind played with her long hair, she looked like a goddess in Michael's eyes.
It would've been blasphemy to even think that, but he didn't care at all. In this moment even if the Goddess of Secrets would've appeared next to Veronica, his eyes wouldn't have left her divine face.
The silence stretched between them, not uncomfortable, the exact opposite. Michael's face moved a bit closer as he answered Veronica's earlier question.
"I think she really wanted to, but she also felt guilty, so as an apology to both of us, she sent me to cheer you up." They still stared into each other's eyes, and as Veronica spoke again her face moved closer too.
"Oh, did she now... And why would she send you I wonder!" They were breathing the same air at this point.
"After the argument she seemed to realize that I was in fact right, and she even seemed to have more respect for me now, since I didn't just stood up to her, but I done so with one purpose only..." Their lips were only centimeters apart at this point, and Veronica's voice sounded lower than usual.
"And what was the purpose?" She asked, while Michael leaned in further and whispered right onto her lips.
"To help and defend you of course..." After that he leaned in and tried to deliver a kiss onto her lips, but she was too quick.
Veronica moved out of the way with expert precision, so the kiss instead of her lips landed on her left cheek. This also brought her lips next to Michael's ear where she whispered...
"I told you already... You have to earn that!" And with that she gently and playfully bit his earlobe, causing his whole body to spasm for a moment.
They separated in the next second. Veronica giggled, which turned into laughter when she saw Michael's annoyed expression. Eventually he began to chuckle as well.
There was just simply no way to stop himself from doing so. Hearing Veronica's laughter always caused all his problems to dissipate and his mind to clear. The feeling it gave was a mix of perfect harmony and a hint of teasing liveliness.
It made his desires boil, but also calm down. It was both a torture to listen to and the best sound he ever heard. He just couldn't get enough of it, but just like every song, this one had an end as well.
Eventually their laughter died down. Veronica's hands were still under Michael's, and even though she teased him a bit with the kiss, she came closer. She scooted over, until their sides were touching, and she leaned her head right on his shoulder.
They both felt the change in the mood. The jolliness was over, and it was time to travel to far more depressing lands... The land of past pains, which haunted every who spent their life in suffering.
But not yet, not until Veronica felt like it. She wanted more, to let the moment stretch as long as possible. Songs and dances all would come to an end eventually, but not if you stop at the last chord or at the last set.
Every last moment can be elongated to a point, and that's exactly what Veronica did.
She stared out at sea in pure silence. Somewhere farther away a ship was about to enter port. A few kilometers out at sea, a lonely lighthouse ignited the waters with its warning light.
The moment, which seemed infinity slowly came to its end.
Veronica spent one last moment to look at the moon. Unlike the lighthouse it wasn't lonely, since it was surrounded with its family of stars, and come by morning she would change places with her brother, the Sun.
It gave Veronica hope... She was hoping to be like the blue moon and not like the lighthouse. She wanted her light to be guiding people through the night, instead of warning to avoid things, like herself.
As these thoughts finally came to an end, she took a deep breath. Her head still rested on Michael's shoulder, and from there she began to tell a long and sad story, which was her life... Her two lives...
