As for how those who didn't become Dao Domain Lord Realm cultivators managed to condense layers around their dao seed without comprehending so many daos, it was done through comprehending smaller support daos that supported the growth of their main dao. 

For example, the Dao of Fire has easier support Daos like the Dao of Burning or the Dao of Heat, while one could also use more complicated and difficult to comprehend Daos like the Dao of Wind as a supporting Dao. 

Of course, the stronger the supporting Dao, the stronger the main Dao and in turn the stronger the cultivator.
