“Just my luck. But good job, son. I take it your tracks were covered and I’m the only one who knows the truth?”
“You, Nick, and I are the only people who know the truth. Though I think Clarke suspected, he couldn’t prove it. That woman, Captain Howard—she wasn’t entirely convinced either, but since she couldn’t find it, there wasn’t a lot she could do to us. The important thing is Raleigh can’t use that book.” He debated telling his father all the details he knew about Kyle and Sandra but decided it would do no good.
“Is there anything in your life Nick doesn’t know?”
“He’s my mate, Dad. We’ve been over this before. I’m not doing it again. And so we’re clear, no, there isn’t anything I don’t share with Nick.”
“Just checking.” John smiled and finished his beer. “Calm down. So, uh, got room for your old man for the night?”
“Yeah, sure. Is everything okay?” Todd asked.
“You bet.”
