The next afternoon, all three of them settled into Dr. Porter’s carriage and made the trip into town to finalize the transfer of ownership from Porter to the Rugers.

“So, we should celebrate.” Porter put one hand on each of their shoulders as they walked back to the carriage. “I haven’t had dinner at the Rambling Moose for too long. What do you say?”

“I’m buying,” Todd said.

“Damn straight you are. I just gave you an entire farm and house,” Porter said.

The weather had warmed up enough that the outdoor patio of the café was open, so they took a table there. After placing their orders, Porter folded both hands together on the table in front of him.

“I received a letter from a former student of mine. It seems you assisted her not so long ago.”

Todd looked over at Nick and patted his knee under the table. “Nick did great.”

Nick felt a surge of warmth from the pride on Todd’s face and in his voice.
