Chapter 36

But Wes had true “Mr. Right” potential. I blew out a shaky breath as the squirrels returned for another game of tag through the oak’s branches. There may or may not be other men out there with whom I’d be equally compatible, but one thing was for sure. Either things would work out for the long haul between Wes and me, or I was going to end up hurt.

I ran a hand over my face and stood. It was time to rejoin the family, so I traipsed downstairs. Helen and Greg were still in the kitchen, but Mom and Dad were out back with a bucket of bird seed, filling thefeeders. Presumably for the birds, but we all knew the squirrels would get at least half.

Greg threw a paper wad at me from where he still sat at the desk, phone in hand, scrolling through whatever. “Hey, how’s lover-boy?”

“Shut up.” I caught the wad and tossed it back, grinning, and beaning him in the head.

He rubbed where it’d smacked him and snickered. “Look how he treats me, Helen. That’s the thanks I get!”
