He walks deeper into the depths of the warm pool of water, and my body trembles.
'The police said there were people hunting in the area, and that a stray bullet took her life. They said it was a freakish hunting accident. That I imagined the other vehicle pushing us over. But I don't believe that. I know what I saw. Someone purposely forced us off the road.'
"I am sorry the memory conjured up painful emotions." He lowers my body into the water. 'But do not be afraid. You are safe in my arms. I will protect you, always.'
Looping my arms around his neck, I weep. Tipping my chin back, he brushes his lips over my mouth. He releases my legs, and I cry out, tightening my hold around his neck. Wrapping my legs around his waist, I cling to his body as if it's a life raft.
"Relax. I will not let go. I promise." He wraps his hands around my waist. 'I am not going anywhere. I will not leave you.'
