Song recommended: To Die For By Sam Smith feat Olafur Arnalds (remix)
The smell of the vanilla tea made Aural's body relax. The vanilla tea specially made by her mother always had a calming effect on her and these were the type of things she knew made her miss home. She could remember the way her mother hummed in the kitchen as she made the tea and prepared cookies.
Their voices would always fill the room with laughter and hope. That kind of love always made her feel safe. Guarded. Natured. Now she was constantly alone. Always trying to take things slowly whilst everyone else lived steadily.
"Tell me, what is earth like?" her mother asked as she placed the cup in front of her and took a seat right next to her. Her mother's eyes shined with such promising light. They watched Aural with happiness and Aural felt her chest tighten.
"It's actually really beautiful. The people are different and all but it's interesting. I already have a job and I work. I speak to hundreds of people every day and sometimes they are rude, other times they are really, really, sweet." I said as she thought about her life on earth.
She watched the way her mother held the cup midway to her mouth. Seeming to watch her carefully watch Aural. "You seem to… like it." her mother said. Carefully trying to figure out how to structure her sentence. "It isn't all that bad mother, maybe I have it easier there but it really isn't that bad," I said.
"But if your father finds a way for you to return to Heaven you will right? You will choose to return home to us right?" her mother questioned. That little bit of excitement clearly heard in her voice. Aural wasn't sure what to say, and she wasn't one to lie. Especially towards her mother.
"I don't know mother…" I said softly. Not prepared to lie yet not prepared to face the truth on its own. "What do you mean, Aural?" her mother questioned. Her aura turning dark as fear began to plant itself.
"Mother I-"
"Love! I'm home! I found something that I think would… Aural?" they heard and turned to see Aural's father. Aural gave her father a sad smile as she slowly stood and faced her father. Allowing him to take in her very sight and she gave me a small forced smile.
He couldn't believe his eyes. Ever since he had held his wife back from trying to fight for her justice, grief had become a heavy burden on his shoulders. Forcing him to sink lower into the sorrow of not having her around.
At first, he had just kept quiet as many of the angels who had heard, had given him their condolences as though his daughter had died.
But she hadn't, she had been given mercy but at the cost of not being able to be around them.
He knew he shouldn't have been so harsh to her. She had been a child filled with so much light yet so much curiosity. He had feared that one day it would affect what was good and light within her.
And it had.
He had blamed himself on so many of the quiet nights and heartache had struck him more times than he could count. Yet now here she was, before him, still a beautiful young girl. His young daughter but he could see the changes.
Her hair was different, her eyes a bit vibrant but still sad. Her body seemed more developed as though one of a woman's in her mid-twenties. He took a step forward, trying to see if his eyes were actually deceiving him or if they had given him a taste of mercy and allowed her to come home to them.
"Daughter…" he whispered, "How…"
Her eyes watered as she noticed the grief in her father's eyes. Not knowing how long this would last, she lunged at him. And he immediately captured her in his arms. Holding onto her tightly as he took in her scent. His heart became warm with love and happiness at that very moment.
He felt everything in him become full and he didn't mind drowning in that kind of love and happiness. As long as he had his daughter with him, he would do what was needed.
"Aural…" he whispered as he placed a kiss on his daughter's forehead. Feeling her shake as tears began to wet his wear. His own daughter was in pain and he knew it was partially his fault.
"Father…" she whispered but then he felt something begin to burn him and he yelped as he pulled away from her. Unsure of how she had come to burn him. When he looked at her, he noticed that she began to glow.
From her hands, it continued to spread and she looked at both of them as they stared with wonder and fear. "Aural…" her mother whispered taking a step towards her daughter but being too scared because she had never seen this before. "Mother…" Aural cried.
"Father…" She went on as she felt her body begin to slightly burn and she knew what was going on. "Daughter!" Her father yelled and she screamed as she felt the fire intensify.
"NO!" her mother cried and before they could get to her she disappeared. Aural's mother fell to her knees, crying loudly at the loss of her daughter yet again. The pain to unbearable. "My daughter! My only daughter!" she cried on her knees, staring at the small burned mark on her floors of where he daughter had been.
"It's going to be okay…" her father whispered as he held his wife. Rocking her back and forth as he comforted her. Yet inside of him, he felt as though he was pushing down a pain that was slowly burning him inside out.
"I want my daughter back! Bring back my daughter!" she cried as she gripped her husband's shirt.
Feeling the pain grow worse than the first.
