Chapter 001- in progress

After a long and obnoxious party spent prodding snails to see what made them react- (they pull their antennae in even when you wave your hand without touching them…) Brill was driving home in the back seat of his dad's pick up. Wearing a dark green baseball cap with "Vietnam" printed on the front, his dad was conversing with a long time family friend in the front seat and his sister was reading Web novels to his left. As they drove, Brill noticed a mother deer and her two fauns on the side of the road. He observed their white tails standing straight up and the way the mother deer was stamping nervously up and down. He pondered at their behavior, but concluded that they must not be as used to cars as deer in the suburbs. Back in the Cerril city's suburbs where Brill was from, you could zip past deer and they wouldn't bat an eye. He used to sometimes play stalking games where he would sneak up on them to see how close he could get without causing the deer to flee. His greatest stalking achievement to date was getting within touching distance of a doe in Birdkill park. She only shied when he reached out to touch her. Rain broke him out of his thoughts as it began to patter on the wind shield, streaking down the windows. A crack of thunder resounded startling him into looking up. When he looked back for the deer, one of the fauns had vanished.
