Celestial Heart

It was against the rules for Angels to fraternize with Devils. Anyone who did would be sent to a place nobody would be seen coming out of. If you went in, you'd never come back out. That was why Adrian had to hide his emotions. But how can he do that when Cora is so mesmerizing?

Chapter 1

I'm Adrian. An Angel. As an Angel, I have duties to attend to. It may be to look after the mortal, or check up on what the masses are doing. Our job is to make sure they're doing good and to access them on how good they are doing. Sometimes I look down at them and wish I could be them. They have so much freedom.

Some mortals believe that once they ascend to heaven, they're truly free. They wrong. A common misconception. Even we have our rules. Some of them are basic ones that are applied to Earth as well. Others are understandable such as the theft of wings. But others are the reason I long to be a mortal. The most important rule in both realms:

DO NOT CONSORT OR ASSOCIATE WITH MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITE RACE

This means that Devils and Angels aren't allowed to be friendly with each other. Those who have committed this crime are banished to a place where nobody ever returns. Much to the dismay of some, we still have to have conversations with Devils. It's usually to discuss where a human needs to be placed. I've attended quite a few of these meetings. One of them changed my life forever.

One morning I was due a meeting to discuss the placement of a human. I just believed it would be like any other meeting I had been to. I prepared myself to be civil and professional with whoever came along. I sat down at the long, glass table and arranged my documents. I heard the door open so I looked up and once I did, my eyes were glued to this devil.

Their hair was curly and brown. The way it gently swayed from left to right was mesmerizing. Her eyes were a beautiful shade of gold and from time to time, I saw them sparkle. Her shiny, red horns perfectly adorned her face. Her wings and tail seemed almost majestic. But her lips. Those soft, rosy lips. How I dream of grasping them in a kiss. And I could tell by her face that she longed for something. And I felt the urge to fulfill her every wish and desire.

She sat down and popped her feet on the desk. I cleared my throat and scramble through my documents. As I looked for a specific piece of paper, she unwrapped a lollipop and put it in her mouth. I felt a chill down my spine as I thought about what she may taste like. Angels aren't meant to think about those kinds of things. I finally found the page and read some of it out.

"This human is guilty of lust. Sleeping around...et cetera." I looked up at her and I saw a small smirk on her lips.

She pulled the lollipop out of her mouth and looked me in the eyes "As long as it isn't harming anyone, I think they should go to heaven."

I raised my eyebrow softly "And why do you think that?" I asked.

"It may not be about the pleasure. Sometimes it's to feel something. These days, less people want a real relationship and care more about sex. And even when people do want to have a relationship, they choose the wrong people." she continued to explain.

I looked at her interested. She made a valid point and I fully realized that.

"These days, the humans down there take their life on Earth for granted. Once they get up here, they can't do much. If I could have what they have, I'd make every day so special. I'd make it count." She looked down.

I could tell how much she hated the restrictions put against Angels and Devils. Angels usually put up with it and maybe even love their work. But devils seem to be the ones who want to break free. Sometimes I do sympathize with them. I looked at her understandingly and she looked back a little surprised. She continued to talk and I continued to listen. I enjoyed listening.

The meeting came to a close. I held the door open for her and she looked me in eyes. I smiled and she just shook her head with a smirk. She waved goodbye with her back turned and walked away. I began to walk away myself and felt an overwhelming happiness within me. My judgement from the beginning was right. She was completely different from other Devils and she longed to see what was on Earth.

Now, I understand how she feels. To want something more than anything but know you can never have it. I see her sometimes and I feel like telling her that I get it. Her and I feel exactly the same. We both wish we didn't have our duties and wish we could live as humans. All I can ever muster is a smile her way, which she never fails to return with a smirk.

I tend to look up at the sky above and think of her. If I had the chance to spend time with her, I would love to show her how beautiful sky. Especially at night. Since she's a Devil, she wouldn't be able to witness it.

I walked into God's office and placed some papers on his desk.

"Thank you. I've been really busy lately" he said as he scribbled on a sheet of paper.

"Oh? How come?" I asked. I had a hunch as to why.

He sighed and looked up at me "For a while now, as you know, there have been some visits down to Hell by Angels. They seem to be causing even more tension. What do you make of this?"

I looked at him and thought for a bit. I came up with a pretty good idea "I believe it to be because of the restrictions against talking with Devils and also because of what all Angels are taught. It seems to have put a lot of wrath in everyone's hearts. Maybe if you got Angels and Devils to communicate on special occasions? Perhaps it could turn into an annual thing?"

I squinted a little once I finished, ready to be scolded for my suggestion. It was worth a try. Maybe if I'm able to talk to her for a bit, I could somehow develop a bond with her.

He thought for a little "I supposed we must at this much. As bad as Devils are, I can't have any Angels causing so much trouble. I'll tell Lucifer to help plan a dinner party."

I nodded along and he continued speaking "We'll have to have some guards around so nothing to intimate happens."

I looked at him, confused "Sir. Don't you want that to happen?"

He looked at me and shook at his head "We have this rule for a reason. When Angels and Devils get too close, a lot of bad things happen. For example, an Angel could impact a Devil and cause them to temporarily become good. Since Devils are so evil, they tend to change back but if they've already been allowed into heaven, they can cause mischief. When it's the other way around, it's even worse. Angels don't seem to revert back and become even worse than the average Devil. They would also have a bunch of information about Heaven and allow Lucifer to take over here. A final reason is that if a Devil and a Angel give birth to a child, a being that neither Lucifer or I could even begin to comprehend. It was a demonic being and the first time we came across something like this, not only did it scare me but it scared Lucifer as well. So that is why neither of us can afford anything like that happening."

I nodded, still in awe at what I'd just heard. I walked out of the door and thought about everything I'd been told. Even though doing anything with her could spell disaster for Heaven, I still wanted to try to get to know her. I began heading towards my room to pick out something to wear for the dinner part that was getting planned.

I picked out an all white suit with a waistcoat and watch. I hung it up neatly and smiled. I once again began to think about the girl. I didn't even know her name. That would definitely be one of the questions I ask her. I wondered what she would wear. I imagined all of the devils coming would wear black so she probably would as well.

As I thought about everything that I believed would happen, I smiled and slowly began drifting off to sleep. I dreamed about meeting her there at the party and forming an instant connection with her. As I talked to her, It began turning into a nightmare. It changed to show her giving birth to a demonic baby and screaming out in agony. Her stomach tore open and her body lay on a bed, lifeless. A demonic figure came towards me and as I thought it was about to kill me, the dream ended and I woke up in a cold sweat. I combed my hair with my fingers and breathed heavily. After taking a while to calm down, I began falling asleep once again.
