Chapter 23

Brian read the note. “I shouldn’t bother to help you. I should let you cook in your own juice up here by yourself like the ogre you play. But Greg is a friend and he asked; so I’m doing this for him.” Brian cocked his head and said, “What is it you so need to know?”

“Greg said I should ask about Jamie’s history.” Bull pinched his nose.

“Do you have a headache?” Brian asked snidely.

“No, why?” Bull leaned back in his chair.

“Because you’re going to have one when I’m through.”

“That bad?” Bull asked.

“Worse. You wonder why Jamie can take a beating? He had daily beatings at home starting when he was eight years old. His father tried to beat the sissy out of him. He went to the hospital with broken bones, a dislocated shoulder, and Jamie was never big enough to fight back. His father was well over six foot and a former linebacker. Jamie took after his mother who was very petite. She died when Jamie was seven, from an aggressive type of breast cancer.”
