Beyond Your Eyes

There is an old classic saying, in which our eyes are the window to our soul. Our deepest fears and desires hide within them. For Celeste D’Angelo, she is someone others would consider to be very blessed. As the only child to a vastly wealthy family whose power and influence knows no bounds, nothing stands in her way. With her serene personality she adored by her friends and is even considered among her peers as a glamorous classic doll. But despite that, internally Celeste has her own struggles, desires, and fears that if someone paid just a little more attention - they might mock and be cruel to her. On the surface nothing fazes or bothers her, but as one gets deeper and deeper into her skin a different story is told. Dean Cortez is a man who is a human hurricane. Also hailing from a wealthy family, Dean takes life by the reins and drives off leaving a disaster in his wake. Crass and wild, much like a wild mustang, he is a force that can’t be stopped. For Dean he indulges in doing whatever, whoever, and whenever. Embodying everything people expect from a rich kid especially one of equal status to the Cortez Family. But everyone has secrets, and though everyone gets close to him, no one sees the secrets he hides beyond his eyes and deep in his heart. Through some circumstances the pair end up together, and while they are vastly different from one another, their defining traits perfectly balance them out like Yin and Yang. Follow along to see how they navigate their mid-twenties, familial and societal pressures, the secrets they carry, and their growing affection for one another. authors note: This is my first kind of slice of life novel! Chapter 105 - Fear

"Dean honey are you ok?"

After spending the night at Celeste's house I decided to spend some time at my parents house. Mainly to distract myself from the unknown woman.

I felt better after telling her father and he thankfully kept me in the loop. As it turns out based on video footage she seems to have memorized the schedule for when the guards change shifts.

It is during that time that she gets in and basically plays hide and seek from everyone. So far it seems she has only been observing Celeste but as for what…that's the thing that concerns me the most.

My first initial thought was that punk that Celeste was initially seeing but I doubt he would send someone like that to watch her.

I then thought about Sol and Felix but both of them have had their hands full with his mother so I doubt they would have made time for Celeste especially after her warning at the wedding.

So it had to be something else. Mr. D'Angelo said he would take care of it and just asked me to not tell Celeste until he knew for certain what was going on. His fear was that by alerting her the person watching would be alerted and maybe set them off.

He did say that his wife would be informed as well as her grandparents so I figured she would be safe for the time being.

But I was spaced out nonetheless with worry. She was not here in my sight where I could see that she was safe. And I had a gnawing feeling in my chest. Like something bad was going to happen.

"Oh sorry mom no everything is fine. Just thinking a bit about my projects." Usually when I was home I worked on my cars unless my alrneta had me join in on what they do for fun.

My mother recently took to puzzles so at the moment we were doing one of her more complicated puzzles. It was the type where once you complete it then you open the corresponding envelope for more pieces to add to the puzzle.

"I know you don't like to talk about it but how would you like to go on a blind date? Some mothers in my circle of friends have daughters who have been asking about you."

I tried my best to not get angry. After all she had no clue I was dating Celeste and in her mind she wanted me to be with someone. To not be lonely I suppose.

"Mom… I appreciate the concern but let me handle my love life. I can't get into too many details right now with you since nothing is official and I would rather keep it lowkey until she is ready but I have been talking to someone."

As much as I would prefer to not say I was seeing or considering anyone, she would 'accidentally' set me up against my will. So this route was my only option.

"Shut your mouth. You better not being lying to me James." She genuinely looked shocked and even teared up a bit.

"Don't jinx it. Let me do what I need to do and I promise I will introduce her once I am ready to do so." My mother was more superstitious than my dad so I threw that in to make sure she keeps her word and not overstep herself.

She nodded quickly and fumbled as she grabbed her phone. "I will just let the girls know that now is not a good time. But I promise I won't breathe a word to anyone."

It was getting late so I started to head up to sleep when my phone rang. I looked at the ID and it was the head director for Emerald Hospital.

My family has long owned many hospital chains for years. Emerald Hosptial was just one of them but it was also arguably our largest.

Aside from the hotel chains I manage that specific hosptial I took over as it had a good management and overall fantastic healthcare system.

It also generated the largest pools of funds. Generally I had very few times when I needed to personally be there. Usually only during our annual review, and board meetings, and just staff celebrations. The director calling me at this hour was odd.

'I wonder what emergency happened for him to call.' I popped in my headphones to listen as I changed into my pajamas.

"Sorry to call you at a late hour sir but a patient arrived that I think is of high interest." He sounded anxious and nervous.

That same feeling of dread came over me but I bottled that feeling down to not freak out the director.

"Last I checked I do not have a medical degree so unless you meant to call one of the attending or surgeons… I have no interest in patients that way."

He laughed nervously and shuffled to what I assume to be a place where no one could hear him. He brought his voice down to a whisper.

"Sir I am not sure if this is something I should inform you of but the reason I am is because of security. Our emergency doctor who is on call right now informed me Celeste D'Angelo was admitted just a moment ago."

I swear my heart stopped when he said that.

"What. Did. You. Say." I ground out the words and gripped the dresser tightly as I felt I might punch a wall otherwise.

"Yes she was transferred from a local hospital. Her father who is with her is requesting his security detail to come in which I need your approval for."

At that point I had already started to grab my jacket and ran down to the garage to grab my bike. I rarely used my motorcycle but if I wanted to get somewhere quick and more discreetly. It was the best option.

"Allow the detail in. Let no one aside from her family any visitation and shut down the VIP floor. She will occupy the whole section and no one besides a designated set of nurses and doctors are allowed in. I am on my way."

I reved the bike to life and drove off towards the hospital. Logically I knew our hospital was the best in the country. She should be fine.

But much like in the school incident and when she fell into that deep depression after her break up with Felix, I felt fear. It was as though she was slipping through my fingertips and going somewhere far where I can't reach her. And that scared me.

"Damn it all."
