Chapter 25: Midnight Rain

Margot kept close to Kate for the rest of the party. She introduced Kate to people around the ballroom and explained their political importance. Kate was sure she wouldn't be able to remember these people's names and she felt overloaded with information. As a result, Kate drank more champagne and wine throughout the night.

Kate realized she was beyond tipsy when it was time to go home and she just cuddled against Theo like he was her pillow. Theo struggled to open the car door and get her inside. Kate refused to be physically parted from him and held unto him like a needy koala. Margot watched him fumble and took pity on him.

"It's late, Theodore," she said. "Spend the night here. We have more than enough guestrooms."

Theodore looked down at Kate happily curled up against his chest and agreed. Neither he nor Kate wanted to go through the three hour drive back to New York after a long party. Margot led them back inside and to a guestroom.
