Chapter 22: Lavender Haze

The details of the underworld blurred as time passed like a bad dream. Kate tried her best to describe what she saw to Veronica who seemed genuinely interested. She had the most difficult time trying to remember Death. His face and voice drew a blank from her. The clearest thing she could remember about her time in the underworld was walking through the empty darkness.

Kate would wake up from nightmares about walking through the darkness and turning around only to see Theo had never been there at all. She had walked through the darkness alone for nothing. The worst nightmares were the ones where she turned around at the last minute as she was stepping through the door. She would watch as Theo was pulled back into the underworld and was lost to her forever.

"You didn't see anything outside of the darkness?" Veronica asked. "No fields or rivers?"

Kate shook her head. "It was just endless darkness for what felt like miles till I saw the door."

"Did you hear anything?"
