Ned Stark knew that the war that was happening between the Wildlings and the Night's Watch was because of the Lord Commander who decided to attack The king beyond the wall Thornir who had visited him in Winterfell a few months ago.
To Ned this was a good act as no King Beyond the Wall ever wanted to talk with him nor even have a civilized conversation with him but this new King Beyond the wall was different somehow.
But as the Warden of the North and the Lord of Winterfell he has a job to do and that is to defend the North and it's people against all threats even if that very threat didn't cause the war.
He knew the deep resentment that the North and the Night's Watch felt towards the Wildlings so trying to convince them to not get involved was something that he didn't even try to do. But still he was able to stop them from helping the Night's Watch for sometime since it wasn't their fight to begin with.
But that changed when the Wildlings had took Castle Black from the Night's Watch which completely caught the Northern Lord's by surprise and forced Ned to take action against the Wildling army.
So in just a few months he had gathered nearly 20k Northmen to go and fight the Wildlings at the wall. The march from Winterfell didn't last long and in just a few days they had arrived at the wall or more precisely in front of Castle Black.
While it wasn't the former Castle Black as it was destroyed a few years ago it was still an impressive fortress that the Night's Watch had built.
This would be the second time that Ned has visited Castle Black with an army and this time there would definitely be a battle.
He had his soldiers set up camp out of range of the archer's on Castle Black's walls and had his men rest and start preparing for the Siege.
But what the Northern Lord's and Ned thought would be an easy would soon turn out to be a battle which they can't win as unlike before the Wildling army is organized and they are not even savages anymore.
Instead they could be similar to Vikings who live in cold lands and often raid foreign lands except the Wildlings don't raid the other Kingdoms.
-----
Ned who was in his tent was meeting with the other Lords of the North on what to do for the siege since unlike before Castle Black has no stone walls instead it was made out of wooden walls to compensate for the time it would take to rebuild Castle Black out of stone once again.
"Lord Stark we should just attack these savages and send them back across the wall where they belong" Barked one of the Lords
"I agree Lord Stark we should not hesitate and attack them head-on that way we can finish this battle and hold out until the King's army get's here to assist" Said another Lord
"No" Said Lord Stark "The Wildlings this time are different than before, never has Castle Black fallen to them before in history so why now" Questioned Lord Stark
"It's simple Lord Stark it's because of the Order of the Night's Watch which failed to defend the Castle from those Savages and because of the Castle not even being it's former glory which was much more imposing than this weak wooden castle in front of us now" Said Lord Umber.
Sure what Lord Umber said was true but somehow Lord Stark had a feeling that it was something different which allowed the Wildlings to take Castle Black.
But whatever it was Lord Stark couldn't think of it at the time so instead of just sitting around he planned to attack the Castle once the siege equipment get's done.
Still he wished that he didn't have to do this since he just recently met with the King Beyond the Wall which changed his prospective of the Wildlings.
But as the Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North he must fulfil his duties.
