Zephyr surveyed Jae-Ya, his silence heavy with concern. He understood the incident wouldn't erase her trauma entirely. However, the seed of fear, he hoped, would blossom into courage, not paralysis. "Are you alright?" he asked, his voice firm yet gentle. "If you can't continue, don't hesitate to retreat."
Several Sentinels, emboldened by the brief lull in the attack, surged towards the wall, their roars echoing through the chaos. Yet, Zephyr's focus remained solely on Jae-Ya.
"I'm fine," she said, her voice betraying a tremor she desperately tried to control. "I stumbled because of inexperience." Her gaze, however, remained vacant, devoid of the fear that once threatened to consume her. Now, it was replaced by a chilling resignation, a dangerous apathy that worried Zephyr more than her initial terror.
"Whatever," Zephyr muttered, his voice laced with a hint of annoyance. "Just clean yourself up first." He pivoted, his gaze fixed on the charging Sentinels. Unfazed, he met their relentless assault head-on.
Meanwhile, a translucent screen flickered into existence before his eyes, a pop-up notification celebrating his victory. A synthesized voice chimed, "Congratulations! The host has cut down 4 Sentinels in succession..." followed by a meager reward: "[Earn 40 Credits!]."
The sum, while insignificant in the grand scheme of the System, held the potential to get converted into a hefty amount of Shards. Yet, Zephyr remained unfazed by the prospect of wealth. He holstered the Emberheart pistol on his left thigh and calmly retrieved the Starshroud rifle from his back with practiced ease.
Zephyr unleashed a torrent of energy blasts from his Starshroud rifle. The air crackled with raw power as the bullets ripped through the air, finding their mark with deadly accuracy. A low cloud of dust kicked up as debris rained down, the sound of clashing metal echoing through the battlefield.
With practiced efficiency, Zephyr emptied a magazine, taking down four Sentinels in a single burst. Their lifeless bodies crumpled to the ground, their limbs splayed at unnatural angles. Dropping the spent magazine, he whipped another from his belt with practiced ease, his movements a blur of trained reflexes.
Suddenly, a Sentinel surged through the hail of fire, closing the distance with alarming speed. Its razor-sharp claws glinted menacingly as it lunged, its aim true. With a snarl, it clamped its vice-like grip onto Zephyr's Polaris Exosuit, its powerful muscles straining.
Undeterred, Zephyr reacted instinctively. His left hand shot out, grabbing the creature's head in an iron grip. Its struggles were in vain as Zephyr brought the Starshroud to bear once more. The rifle, held steady against the creature's thrashing body, unleashed multiple, concentrated shots into its underbelly.
With a bone-jarring thud, Zephyr and the Sentinel's massive body slammed into the ground. In a swift maneuver, he flung the lifeless carcass aside and rose to his feet, ready to rejoin the fray. The impact, however, had left its mark. Both shoulders of his Polaris Exosuit bore the brunt of the Sentinel's grip, the metal slightly warped and dented. Had he not instinctively countered the attack, the suit's integrity might have been compromised.
A momentary lull descended upon the battlefield. Thanks to the relentless hail of gunfire from the Legions, the immediate vicinity of the Divine Light Fortress was free of the rampaging Sentinels. Zephyr scanned the battlefield, his keen eyes noting several fallen beasts that never made it close to the fortress walls.
A metallic click echoed beside him, drawing his attention to Zexian. The Legion with Hyperion Exo-suit expertly chambered a round into his sniper rifle. His movements were seasoned and precise. With a sharp crack that cut through the din, a distant Sentinel crumpled to the ground, its lifeless form a testament to Zexian's marksmanship.
Zephyr's brow furrowed in surprise. 'I had no idea his sharpshooting skills were so impressive,' he admitted, a hint of respect lacing his thoughts.
Out of nowhere, a jarring beat of drums shattered the brief reprieve. A holographic display flickered into life before their eyes, emblazoned with the words.
Tring!!

Zephyr's expression darkened. 'Again, the unexpected!' He complained in his head. During his experience in his previous life, quests with a chain mechanism had a time delay of 10 seconds between waves. But now, even though the First Wave had not yet been completed, the Second Wave was coming.
The ground shuddered violently once more, heralding the arrival of a fresh wave: sixty more Sentinels joining the fray. This overwhelming surge overwhelmed the defensive line. Dozens of beasts, fueled by primal fury, bulldozed through the hail of bullets, their sheer numbers proving too much for the defenders.
Wei Zexian, his visor reflecting the chaos unfolding before him, clicked his tongue in frustration. The limitations of his sniper rifle gnawed at him - four magazines, each holding a meager eight bullets, felt woefully inadequate in this tide of monstrous adversaries.
High atop the wall, Da-Mi, alongside her comrades, watched the situation deteriorate with growing concern. A frown etched itself onto her face. "We need to reinforce the frontline," she declared, her voice firm. "Everyone, head to Firearms Dealer 1 and buy whatever weapons you can."
Yamato, mirroring her urgency, echoed her command. "Let's move!" he bellowed, wasting no time with further discussion.
Despite their fluency in Apexian, English remained their preferred language in critical situations. The urgency of the moment demanded absolute clarity, and the familiar cadence of their native tongue minimized the risk of miscommunication in the heat of battle.
Zephyr unleashed a relentless barrage from his Starshroud rifle, emptying the last magazine. Yet, his frustration mounted as only one Sentinel fell. The creatures' erratic movements and sheer numbers hampered his attempts to land consistent blows. The hail of bullets became increasingly ineffective, swallowed by the unrelenting tide.
Not bothered, Zephyr tapped into a different reserve. "Activate hand-to-hand combat," he commanded, his voice echoing within his jet-black and silver helmet. A surge of blue energy coursed through the Polaris Exosuit, accompanied by a low whine emanating from its core.
With a powerful thrust, Zephyr propelled himself into the air, discarding the spent Starshroud rifle. He spun mid-air, unleashing a devastating roundhouse kick that connected squarely with the Sentinel before him. With a resounding boom, the beast was sent sprawling, its momentum broken.
Despite the temporary salvation, Zephyr knew this was merely a delaying blow. The remaining Sentinels, their primal instincts driving them forward, continued their relentless charge.
A clamorous crack echoed through the chaos as Jae-Ya's shot, aimed at the Sentinel near the Main Gate, found its mark. The bullet, however, ricocheted harmlessly off the creature's hardened hide.
That served as a signal for Zephyr, who had been battling the Sentinels head-on in his nimble Polaris Exosuit. Effortlessly, he weaved through the monstrous horde, deflecting their attacks and creating opportunities for the NPC Legions to unleash volleys of gunfire.
Suddenly, a lone Sentinel broke free from the fray, its primal urge driving it toward the vulnerable gate. Reacting with lightning reflexes, Zephyr activated his back thrusters and propelled himself forward with Aether Energy. The combined force launched him into a devastating blow, his fist imbued with crackling energy, connecting squarely with the Sentinel's head.
A shockwave rippled outward from the point of impact, momentarily silencing the surrounding soundscape.
Unrelenting in his pursuit, Zephyr launched himself skyward, his Polaris Exosuit defying gravity with a surge of Aether. He then plummeted down, transforming his descent into a weapon. The ground erupted in a deafening explosion as he collided with the earth, the shockwave halting the Sentinels' charge in their tracks.
Engulfed in the swirling dust cloud, Zephyr waged a brutal campaign. Enhanced by Aether Energy, his every strike resonated with raw power, inflicting excruciating pain and sometimes instant death upon the beasts. Yet, the imposing Exosuit wasn't an impenetrable shield. The Sentinels' razor-sharp claws and tails lashed out, leaving gouges on the suit's surface, a testament to their relentless assault.
Thankfully, Zexian's unwavering support proved invaluable. His keen eyes and precise aim found their mark, eliminating one to three Sentinels that managed to breach Zephyr's defenses, ensuring the Exosuit remained operational amidst the chaos.
But just as a sliver of hope flickered, a chilling notification materialized in the sky:
