Chapter 19

They brought my father back in a wheelchair, he looked weaker than he had been when they took him away. I undid the bed, so they could install him, and once done I covered him up.

" How are you feeling?" I asked him.

"I'm in great shape," my dad said as he struggled to keep his eyes open.

"I'm not kidding dad."

"I'm fine sweetie, just a little tired. Stop worrying about me." I breathed in annoyance then I looked at the doctor.

"Those are the effects of the dialysis. Don't worry. He's going to be a little tired and nauseous too. But we're going to give him a few things to alleviate that." the doctor did some checking. He showed him a small button to use if he ever needed help. And he informed us that the nephrologist will come by with the test results tomorrow. Before leaving he told us that they were going to bring food to my father, we thanked him and then he left.

"Do you want me to lower the bed a bit?" I asked my father.

"No it's fine." he opened his eyes and looked around the room and looked at me.

"I'm sorry baby to put you through this. I know it's not easy for you to be here." he said to me, shaking my hand.

"It's okay Dad, if you could just stop calling me baby." my father smiled slightly.

"What? Am I embarrassing you in front of your friend?"

"Dad!"

"Okey I got it." Then he addressed Mr. Davis who was standing at the foot of the bed. "I want to thank you for staying with my daughter."

"It is with pleasure Sir."

"Come on,call me Bayron. Sir makes me feel older than I actually am" Mr Davis smiled and looked at me. Then my father turned his attention once again to me.

"You look bad darling, you should go home and rest." he tells me.

"No way. I have no intention of leaving you alone."

"With all the doctors here, I doubt I'll be alone."

"Your father is right, you need to rest." Mr. Davis also retorted.

And now they're all ganging up on me. I glared at Mr. Davis.

"I'm sorry but it's not debatable, I'll sleep on the couch." As I said that, Drew knocked on the door that had been left open and entered.

"Oh the spy finally deigns to show up." they both laughed but my father coughed a little.I took a glass of water from the bedroom dresser and gave my father a sip.

"I popped by to see how you are. I see you haven't lost your good humor."

"I'm fine, and you came right on, tell Meggie that nothing's going to happen to me so she can go home, look at her face, it looks like it's been ages since she slept. " I rolled my eyes at my dad.

"Personally I find your look very good." Drew replied looking at me and I smiled fleeing his gaze. "But honestly, go home and get some sleep you really need it, I'm sure you must be knackered. I'll keep an eye on your dad and call you if anything happens.

"When three sane men tell you to do something, do it! Besides, judging by that suitcase I deduce that you came straight from the airport, you should go check the condition of the house."

I hadn't thought of that, when my father was brought to the hospital he was unconscious, so no one had closed. So I decided to go home.

"Okay, but I'll leave here only after you've eaten."

Drew's pager started ringing.

"I have to go, I'm going to ask for food to be brought to you right away."

Then he left.

"I didn't know you still had contact with him ." said my father, closing his eyes for a moment.

"We didn't keep in touch, he just called me because he saw you here."

"He asked me about you every time we met. He must be happy to see you again." he teased me.

"What are you implying by that?" I looked at Mr. Davis who was not losing a beat of the conversation.

"I'm not implying anything, I'm just asking a question. Unless you and…" he looked at Mr. Davis. "Oh I see!!" I frowned. It's crazy how he always managed to make jokes when he barely had the strength to speak.

"How about trying to rest instead of clowning around." I said adjusting the blanket over him and he closed his eyes. I went to sit on the couch and Mr. Davis came to sit beside me.

"You know you don't have to stay here."

"I know but I don't want to be anywhere else." our eyes locked, and it was as if my heart stopped beating for a second.

"Thanks." I whispered to him and we stayed there in silence. The headaches had persisted. I who boasted of bearing well tiredness, I was beginning to really feel exhausted.

Half an hour later, a food cart was pushed into the room. I woke my father up to help him eat. He complained a bit about the quality of the food, and he objected to me helping him eat, but he was so weak that after a while he let me help him.

It hurt me a lot to see my father in this state but I told myself that at least he was alive.
