Chapter 12

In such a short space of time, that was startling.

“Does this mean…” Nick bit his lip. “Does this mean Kathy is dead?”

“No. It doesn’t.” Daniel risked it and put a hand on Nick’s knee. “It just means that someone is messing with your head.”

Nick scowled and looked at Daniel’s hand on his knee. But instead of pushing it away, he pressed a hand over Daniel’s.

“I can stay calm in the field, under heavy fire. I’m a Physical Training instructor and I can deal with rowdy squaddies. Why can’t I do the same with this?”

“It’s because this is on a more personal level. Kathy’s someone you love and you’re scared for her.” Daniel nodded. “It’s perfectly normal. Our psyche gets skewed big-time when it’s someone we love.”

“I suppose.” Nick looked at him. “Do you and Detective Pell…do you get scared for each other?”

Daniel wasn’t about to say anything to distract him. Nick deserved honesty.
