Babysitting

"Why did that check up have to be invasive!" Chara argues.

The doctor left happily after packing her goods away, leaving her angry patient pouting in her bed. She turns to us both.

"I would rest a little more Chara." She states.

"Yes…she should." Shimon grunts.

"Master Shimon!" I shout.

"I was told about Chara waking up, I came to visit our new witch." Shimon comments.

"N-new witch? Why did you kill Saniya? She was amazing at her job!" She yells.

"We can teach you…right?" Shimon says bluntly.

I heard clicking noises out in the hallway, the doctor was still there tapping her feet loud enough to catch my attention.

"Sorry Master Shimon, I need Christian!" She says.

"Go, leave me with your partner. You can trust me right?" He smiles.

"O-of course, good day Master Shimon." I replied.

"Come, I need you to babysit Mars pretty please!" She begs.

Inviting me into his room where he was sitting up, he thuds back on the bed staring out at something.

"I think he just dazed, but I need to run errands outside of the compound and need someone to sit with him." She says.

"I can do that I think…" I replied with confusion.

"Thanks Christian! Make sure he is hydrated as the medicine is still in him!" She shouts leaving.

The door slams behind me, I am instantly annoyed that they have me play these sorts of games like these. I am merely disposable to be able to play house like this with a sick looking child.

"Mars are you okay?"

He is quiet, Gavyn kicks up beside me with his hands in his pockets.

"He was kidnapped like Reid, he isn't a vampire Christian." Gavyn comments.

"How do you know?"

"The doctor doesn't seem to know does she?"

I think to myself for a couple seconds, looking up at the disoriented child, I feel sorry for him, but I also feel sorry for myself in the whole ordeal. We sit for several hours together, I find myself bored even in Gavyn's presence.

"Can you teach me stuff?" I ask, "Or maybe I should ask why you exist?"

"Because you endure and struggle, I want to see you become something instead of your life is nothing here."

"Things were easier in your time…"

"I wish you would stop saying that Christian!"

"I am tired of your selfish attitude!" Gavyn yells.

We buttheads, I scream in pain to rub my forehead. He seized me by the hand bringing me over to the boy who fell back asleep and we both touched his arm being pulled into his mind temporarily blinded.

All I hear is music playing, wafting in the air, the sounds of a flute playing lightly circulating into the breeze, no images I could find in his mind. I withdraw gasping trying to catch my breath.

"Gavyn, what was that music?" I ask.

"What music? I saw Mars being lured by someone in the shadows." Gavyn states.

"Hmm…"

"We should be doing our best to take care of him Christian."

"What about Chara?" I wonder.

"You can bring her here sometimes and explain to her. She should understand right?" Gavyn states.

"Gavyn…what's going to happen to us here?"

I yank on the chain connected to my collar panicking internally, is this what I will be doing the rest of my life? I started to rapidly breathe overthinking scenarios in my head when I felt a hand placed on my shoulder.

"Take it easy…"

Gavyn ambles over to the water, examining it by lifting it up, sifting it around letting it slosh the left and then to the right. Eyeing it, setting it down he laughs.

"Why would I think something would be in this?" He snickers.

"Can you really check composition?" I questioned.

"Sort of…I can tell if it's tainted."

"I see…that is a useless skill then."

"I was just making sure his water wasn't the reason he is in this hazy state!" He argues.

Over at the filing cabinets I gawk through many of the files but see nothing of interest or particular to Mars in the piles. I close the case locker with a sigh.

"He is new, I doubt you will find anything." Gavyn clarifies.

"Gavyn, do you know how to get out of this place?"

"Not yet, but give me a few days and I can give you that answer."

"I am counting on you then!" I shout.

With that said he vanishes into thin air leaving me alone with Mars, the lights are low as he rests silently in the guest room. He looks about seventeen or eighteen, he is extremely tired, barely unable to look me in the eyes.

Once in a while, he coughs or wheezes, there is a note on the back of the door. I swipe it, reading it thoroughly. Walking over to his bedside I help set him up to drink the water on the stand.

"Mars, can you hear me?"

He leans his head to the side returning to rest, his forehead is normal temperature. His body is slightly colder than the rest. Tapping on the door has me jump up to answer it.

A man dressed in a red apron from the kitchen dropped by, he was holding a black tray with food inside the translucent cap.

"Hello, is this room with Miles Keeper?" He asks.

"No, this is Mars I am sorry." I answer.

The man takes a look at a small notebook in his pocket, noticing the numbers are different from the ones written. I stop the man from closing the door by gaping my foot in between.

"Are you telling me there is more than one kid here?" I whisper.

"There are a few who are being tested, yes, why?" He comments.

"Can I ask why?"

"It's best you don't, just watch the boy for now please."

"Understood, thank you…"

I let the man leave, acknowledging there is a bigger picture going on, in the mental photographs of what happened Alex...I only wish to protect more now.

"I am going to stop you, Shimon…I swear…" I say in a soft voice.
