Kaiwharawhara, Wellington
"Whiro is the lord of darkness and he lives in the underworld. He also represents death," Aroha quietly said to Andrew and Eleanor. "His followers live amongst us, ready and waiting to strike and take us."
Andrew and Eleanor listened carefully as the young girl explained the waiata, the song being sung to honour the passing of Ngaiti. Chief Te Wharepouri invited Andrew and Eleanor to attend the tangihanga, the funeral, for Ngaiti, and, as suggested, they arrived at the Kaiwharawhara pa late morning and were immediately met and welcomed by Aroha outside the village. Eleanor immediately took a liking to the young M?ori girl who spoke English so well, and learned she was taught English by the wealthy family whom she worked for.
