I checked the monitor first and the drip before checking the patient who was breathing heavily through the ventilator and I froze to realize who the patient was.

I stepped back from him as he was still lying lifeless on the bed. I placed my hand over my mouth which was opened wide out of surprise.

"No, no!" I said as I shook my head vehemently in denial. "Richard?" I said out loud than I had planned to sound as I moved closer to him.

I walked my eyes throughout his body and before I could stop myself, the tears rolled down my cheeks. I wasn't just bawling because I was standing by the same man who had hurt me so much but because of the lifeless state, he was in.

I trailed my hands down his body before holding his hand that didn't even move at my touch. The hand that did great things with my body, the hand that held my cheeks and cupped my breast was lying flat on the bed without moving.
