Chapter 39 - James' Delusional Betrayal

Two weeks earlier....

It is late in the evening in National City and James is making his way to the same warehouse where he met Lillian Luthor for the first time a few weeks prior. James himself has demanded another meeting with the Luthor matriarch, seeing as her promises that she would take care of Lena, and make sure that she stays away from Kara and Alura, just haven't come true. James is aware of how Kara thinks Lena is good and everything, and now has chosen the Luthor over him, but he won't let that stop him. James believes with all his being that Lena Luthor cannot be trusted, no Luthor can be trusted. James does realise the irony of the fact that, as here he is dealing with Lillian Luthor. But, the only thing James is certain of, is while you can't trust a Luthor, you can trust a Luthor to want to secure their family name and legacy. In this instance James knows that Lillian Luthor wants to secure the L-Corp (formerly Luthor Corp) name by making sure that Lena runs the company successfully, and in Lillian's mind this means staying entirely focused on that company, not having relationships with anyone. While James does not trust Lillian Luthor, he does trust that her family interests align with his interests of not wanting Lena anywhere close to Kara or Alura. James just knows that Lena is trouble, and if he doesn't do anything about it, Kara will just continue to blindly trust the Luthor and it will not only blow up in her face, but Alura's too. Kara may be angry at him currently, but James just knows that one day she will see the truth, see Lena Luthor for who she truly is, and that is when she will thank him for everything he has done to protect her, and her daughter.

James walks inside the warehouse, which is their agreed upon meeting location. As he enters the building he notices a few black four by fours with a few men inside, just sitting there waiting, clearly signalling that Lillian Luthor is already here. James then walks further and further inside the warehouse building, until he once again enters the main big open area. As soon as James steps inside this area of the building he sees Lillian standing in front of a metal table, a smirk on her face. Two guards then approach James.

"Arms out, we need to search you." One of the guards says.

James nods, putting his arms out and allows the guards to carry out their search. After about a minute the guards turn and nod at Lillian.

"He's clean." The guard informs her.

Lillian then nods her head, silently telling the guards to let James walk closer to her.

"Apologise for precautions Mr Olsen, but a woman like me can never be too careful." Lillian says, with a smirk.

James has a slight scowl appear across his face.

"I'm sure that must be true." James basically sneers.

Lillian chuckles at James.

"Here you are, clearly thinking such unsavoury things about me, yet you still come to me for my help. Before judging me Mr Olsen, you may want to look in the mirror." Lillian says.

"I am not like you. I am doing this for the safety of my friend." James quickly replies. "And everything I do, I do for the sake of my family's legacy. Our reasons are not so different after all." Lillian smirks again.

James just shakes his head and scoffs.

"It doesn't matter. You know why I am here. You told me you would keep your daughter away from Kara, but the opposite has happened!" James says, annoyed.

"Indeed I did..... I must admit..... I never suspected that my dear daughter would take such an interest in a person like Miss Danvers, let alone a romantic one." Lillian replies, "But you need not worry Mr Olsen, as I have a plan. I know my daughter very well, I raised her after all. Through the years I have always tried to make her strong, from manipulation, from her self-doubts and such. But I have always found that she is incredibly weak, and my.... motherly prodding has always produced the opposite effect. So... that is why I know how to.... guide.... Lena in certain directions.... with some carefully crafted words here and there. In fact, I have already laid the foundation for my daughter's self-doubts."

As James listens to Lillian speak, for a moment he feels a little bit of sympathy for Lena Luthor, listening to the horrifying ways that this woman, that stands before him, is explaining how she 'raised' Lena to try and make her 'strong'. But that sympathy for Lena quickly fades away as James remembers that she is a Luthor, she is just like Lex and Lillian, a criminal, trouble, the worst of the worst.

"So that is what you hope for me to rely on now? The self-doubts you've planted for your daughter? Sorry.... but didn't you already try to speak to your daughter and get her to end her relationship with Kara.... I don't see how a few more choice words will have any better effect." James replies.

Lillian smirks once more.

"Exactly. I know my daughter very well, and while what I have put in motion may cause the desired effect, something else is required to make it.... final." Lillain smiles, "That is where you come in." "Me?" James asks, surprised.

Lillian nods and then turns around to walk to the other side of the metal table, revealing a black big heavy looking case laying on the table. James walks closer to the table while Lillian opens up the case. Inside the black case is a small grey plastic bag with the word 'CADMUS' printed on it. Lillian picks the plastic bag up and slowly opens it.

"You are going to use this." Lillian says, with another smirk.

"What.... what is it?" James asks, confused.

Lillian then nods to one of her guards who then walks over to her and hands her a small spoon. Lillian puts the spoon inside the plastic bag and scoops out a spoonful of red powder. James immediately can tell what the red substance is.

"That's.... that's red Kryptonite...." James says, shocked.

"Hmm... not exactly." Lillian smirks, examining the red powder, "This is my altered version of red Kryptonite, which I have worked on specifically for this purpose. See my daughter, she thinks I don't understand love, but I do. Love is just a chemical process that occurs within your body. It is the process of when high levels of dopamine and the hormone norepinephrine are released, nothing more. So, what I have done, is I have altered this original red Kryptonite to latch onto that process of 'romantic love', which is a different process to love one feels for their family. What this powder will therefore do, is it will alter your friends brain process as long as the powder is in her system. Instead of feeling 'love' for a person, in this case my daughter, she will feel a lot of anger and rage. However, it is not a simple as just giving your friend the drug and then it will just work, it will need to be triggered by something my daughter does to upset and/or anger your friend. That is where I come in, and as I mentioned, I have already planted the seeds in my daughter's brain where I know she will eventually do something that angers or upsets your friend."

James still looks shocked at Lillian. James knows that this is simply pure evil which Lillian has created, and it makes even him think twice about following this through.

"But.... Kara... she's human.... Kryptonite only works on Kryptonians..." James tries to lie.

Lillian laughs.

"Oh, you don't think me that foolish, do you?" Lillian smirks, "I have to admit, at first when I found out that my daughter was dating some blonde woman with a child, I had no idea that she also was that filthy alien Kryptonian. But then you came to me. Jimmy Olsen, best friend of Superman, who came to National City just as Supergirl appeared, and became friends with a certain blonde reporter, who he just happened to be asking me to make sure my daughter stays away from. That was all more than enough for me to put two and two together."

James goes slightly wide eyed, realising that it is him that has exposed Kara's secret to Lillian Luthor. James does once more momentarily feel bad, awful for this betrayal of his friend. But after a few moments James thinks of the fact that Kara has told Lena Luthor her secret identity, so that means that Lillian Luthor was probably going to find out from Lena sooner or later anyway. This therefore allows James to clear his conscience.
