Chapter Eight

I was stupidly late picking Summer up from school because not only had I forgotten how to function after what happened in the park but I had also lost how time worked apparently, an hour late to pick up Summer and all I could think about while she told me about her day was what was going to happen when I next saw Mason.

"I already know most of my 5 times tables, did you know that!! and Miss said If I learned it all by Monday she would give me a gold star next to my name, one of the girls in my class has a gold star already because she can subtract bigger numbers than most of us" Summer was speeding through her sentence as I unpacked the takeaway that I had ordered as there was no time to prepare healthy food.

"Sorry, Kiddo for not giving you any healthy food so far," I said as she shrugged and started peering over at what I was unpacking from the bag, "it's been the best week ever! mum and dad never let me have takeaway ever!" She said as I could sense the exaggeration from a mile off, "huh? is that right, well I guess you'll enjoy this Chinese while we watch The Winx club huh?" she looked at me lost and I laughed, these were moments that I generally forgot how much I can't stand children sometime, like yeah, I can get along with them because I know I can give them back, but some moments, like these I don't want to give them back, I want to keep them all to myself.

"I want to watch FiFi though," she whined as I was kicked back into disliking children again, I mean I love being a nanny for the sheer fact you get to tell em what to do at all times, and they aren't yours but sometimes I really would like to mould them into like a little me where they like doing cool things and watching decent shows, like The Winx Club!

"But don't you want to see magic and pixie dust?" I asked as she looked at me while she was mentally thinking, she walked over to the living room and placed herself on the floor in front of the coffee table, she looked over at me and gestured handing me the remote.

"Are they like Tinkerbell?" I smiled as I walked over with two plates full of chow mein and placed hers in front of her taking the remote in my other hand, "yes they are, but cooler!" I said as she did a little wiggle on the floor buzzing with excitement which I am not sure was because of the food or the show, but I'd gladly say the excitement was for both.

As a big kid myself persuading little children to watch something that you want to watch should be in the Nanny book of persuasion 101 because there would be no way I could tolerate watching back-to-back FiFi and the Flowertots and The Fimbles or whatever the children nowadays watch, I mean I've passed that and if we want to teach the children of the new generation new things then it had to start with exciting shows, that maybe make belief BUT they are very good with building a creative imagination for the little ones, and nobody can fight me on this point.

A few hours went by and we went from watching The Winx club to Summer completely destroying me at Mario Kart, and when I mean destroying she came 10th and I came 12th which for me is dramatic because I am a heck of a lot older than she is, I used to play games like this all the time, and I am getting beat by a 5-year-old!!!

"Is Mason coming around today?" Summer asked as I was cleaning up the kitchen and she was sitting at the island doing her homework, I turned around and flicked my wet fingers at her with a playful frown "am I not good enough, he's been around nearly every day so far!" I asked as I faked crying as she giggled and shook her head "no! I love being in your company but, he's cool too, I barely get to see him so when I do it's great!" she said as she went back to scribbling down on her paper leaving me staring at how purely innocent she was.

I can't imagine being away from someone for so long knowing that the little time you spent together meant everything, I mean I do, it was my whole family life but seeing it in someone as young as she was broke my heart, it wasn't even like Mason was her dad, he was her uncle and he had this kind of impact on her.

I grabbed a towel from the towel rack beside the oven and wiped her hands dry quickly grabbing my phone from where Summer was and leaning on the countertop.

Me: Hi Mase, I was wondering if you were free tonight?

I wasn't expecting anything as he did say he was busy doing training and all sorts of promotions for different types of brands and companies, I mean what a life to have where you can get stupid money as a salary and be the face of all sorts of brands from Nike to Trivago! I mean come on, why would you have any worries when you can have anything you want doing something you love?

Summers Uncle: Hi, I am um actually supposed to be heading to a premiere tonight for one of the movies that have just come out, Spiderman actually, so maybe I can swing around afterwards and check up on both of you?

I blew some air out of my mouth and mentally shrugged, there wasn't much he could do, he had a schedule and I knew that he was busy tonight, just seeing the look on Summer's face when she speaks about mason made my heart all warm and fuzzy, I loved seeing how in love she was with her uncle, you could clearly see she loved his company and their bond.

Me: Yeah no that's fine just Summers been asking about you, I did ask her why I wasn't good enough haha, but she really enjoys your company when she can get it. Enjoy Spiderman ya big kid

I put my phone face down and brought myself back into reality which was looking after Summer who had disappeared from the island to the sofa, I walked over and she was indeed watching Fifi and the Flowertots, I smiled watching over her and leant on the wall, I really cannot get over how adorable she was when she was invested in something.

"Summer you wanna play hide and Seek?" I asked as she turned to face me with an evil smile.
