Drawing himself up to his full height, Evan took a deep breath. “I don’t need your apology—I need you to do your damned job. The name of the victim shouldn’t dictate what level of service they receive or if they are treated with courtesy. Keep in mind that all those people whose names aren’t Camody or Dwyer—folks just like you—are the ones whose taxes pay your salary. They’re the people you should be protecting.”

Out of his mother’s line of sight, Danny winked at Evan and gave him a sly thumbs up sign. It lifted his spirits. Going for broke, Evan sneaked a glance at Nessa and almost gasped. She was looking at him with an odd expression—was it respect? After he’d just belittled her power base?

Returning his attention to the detective, Evan continued. “So has your ‘rigorous investigation’ yielded any suspects?”
