The sun was setting and as the orange light spread across the open field two young people sat and stared ahead. A girl and a boy. The girl had brown hair as thick as wool and warm skin that looked bronze in the light of the setting sun. she was grinning as she took in the scenery loving every part of it , although when she looked down next to her she saw her friend frowning. After nudging him and calling out his name a few times she sat up and gently wiped the hair from his face, earning a rare smile from him. He had pale skin and long black hair, that he wore in a ponytail most of the time, and he was always careful to brush it every morning. The boy looked over at her for the first time in a while and pulled her towards him. As she fell on his chest, he placed one hand on her back and kept her there.
'you're so clingy' he teased, nudging her cheek.
She smiled easing into his embrace
He was always frowning at the end of the day. It's how he'd always been. No matter how many times she lectured him about the endless wrinkles he'd get if he kept scrunching up his face. From the day she saw him sitting on a ledge of a mountain top, his hair almost coal like hair blowing against his face and legs daring closer to the edge. she grabbed him out of instinct, afraid he would jump. That was the first time they met and the start of their journey together. It all started with her reaching out to him.
" My name is Taylor, what's yours" she said in a hurry. these were the first words she ever said to him.
"You thought I was going to jump, didn't you? "The boy on the ledge said looking back amusement and a small smirk on his face. He jumped of the ledge and inched closer to her.
"Uhm…i…I don't really know, I kind of of just did it" she sheepishly replied now embarrassed at her previous assumption.
"You know telling me your name probably wasn't going to work if I did have plans on jumping" he continued teasing, enjoying the look on her face as she got more and more embarrassed. But what ensued next was unexpected as she squealed and put her head in her palms.
"I'm so sorry ..." then in an attempt to save her pride tried to, make a run for it.
"My name's Caelus. Nice to meet you" he said grabbing her wrist. seeing their conversation going nowhere, he extended out his hand. "Don't be too upset. Besides you're not the first person to think that"
After gaining some composure she stood up straight and shook his hand and asked, "can I sit with you, the suns setting. It's pretty don't you think?" she cautiously asked. He nodded and they climbed on. They sat in silence for a while until Caelus looked up and began to speak.
"I hate the sunset. You want to know why", he said with a dry smile. She shook her head in confusion.
"Because the night comes after" she deadpanned .
"I don't get it "she breathed out while staring him straight in the eyes, "what's wrong with night?". He looked at her and stared at the sun for a second before continuing.
"The night is fine from a bird's eye perspective. it's what comes with the night. Dreams are inevitable and are always their but when the sun rises, they disappear. The dreams give the illusion of a better life and comfort you or attack you but for how long.", he paused looking resentfully at the sun. "The sun doesn't care though it comes and goes leaving us to suffer the consequences of its action. leaving us to be engulfed in darkness and egged on by dreams before crashing in and breaking the wall down in a never-ending cycle." He looked beside him and saw a teary-eyed girl looking straight at him. Her eyes were the kind of green that spoke to the soul of nature and could see the essence of life, 'they were beautiful' he thought he looked surprised but even more so when Taylor jumped on him and gave him a hug. through her stream tears came a strong voice. she said one thing that stuck with him for the rest of his life.
"No matter how dark the night is the sun will always rise" and as she wiped her tears and began to walk away, she said "I know we just met but I think I'm going to like you, were similar you and i" she paused giving him a long look, a look with an emotion he couldn't seem to grasp
"Also " she shouted as she began to walk away " you are way to broody, smile more i know it's hard since we're both broken kids but try it Kay" she giggled and ran away.
"Broken kids, huh "he muttered as she faded into the distance. 'I'll have to stay from that one she seems like trouble ', he thought himself as he sat back and continued sitting on the edge.
