Successor

Shin sat there with tears running down his face as he held Yaiba's body, After a couple of minutes Shin wiped his tears away and looked down at Yaiba. "I hate you.."

He punched Yaiba's body, honestly, Shin still couldn't process everything that was going on but now he had other things to worry about.

He turned his head towards the once shadowy figure who stepped out into the light, the figure shook him to his core. 3 rows of eyes.

Shin couldn't see anyone's actual appearance but those eyes threw him off completely, before he could register the things that were going on a sharp ring of a sword resounded through the hall.

*Shiiiinnnnggg!*

Shin reflexively shivered a bit hearing that sound but he quickly put his guard up.

*Bang!*

Without even knowing how, Shin was sent flying from Yaiba's body, through a wall, and finally crashing into a table.

He spat out blood and gasped for air trying to gain his bearings but the sound of someone walking towards him interrupted. 'Move! Move!'

The steps of the creature crept closer and closer until eventually it stood over him, it lifted its sword like an executioner then swung down.

Shin's blood went cold seeing this, the absolute fear of death clouded his mind. He used all of his strength and jumped away from the incoming sword.

After moving he quickly maneuvered his head to the side as a punch came hair length away from its target, Shin's body was filled with adrenaline as he backed away upon seeing an opening.

"You're one of my descendants aren't you? You're Impressive for someone of a young age, for that, I'll give you a choice" The six-eyed figure spoke.

Shin raised an eyebrow before speaking out in a tired voice. "A choice? descendent?"

The 3 eyed man put his sword away while speaking. "Yes, I'll spare your life and you will become my successor and a demon, or you can die"

He thought over his options and without taking long Shin made his choice. "I accept"

Shin didn't know much about demons except the obvious, the kids that were once here usually talked about creatures that avoided the sun and hated wisteria flowers which he had assumed to be demons long ago.

But the fear of death was way stronger than the worry of not walking under the sun, there were always umbrellas to fix this problem, and he can always figure out what he meant about being one of his descendants another time.

"I won't be converting you just yet, I'll be teaching you the first form of Moon breathing and leave you to final selection. If you pass I will teach you everything I know and convert you." The man turned from Shin who was left confused.

"Moon breathing? Final selection? What are those?" Shin whispered to himself while looking at his new teacher or family back.

The man turned his head towards Shin and by what Shin could tell opened his top row of eyes. "Moon style is one of the many breathing techniques that were derived from Sun breathing, the first of them all." Shin was able to hear a hint of sadness yet inferiority from his words but it quickly passed as fast as it came.

The figure quickly moved on to explain the other question that was asked. "Final Selection is an entrance exam for individuals who seek to become a Demon slayer of the Demon Slayer Corps. The exam takes place on Fujikasane Mountain, where Wisteria flowers bloom every season from the mountain's foot to its slope."

Shin nodded his head, he was left with more questions than answers but he didn't have time to worry about these things, he would have to learn in time.

"Mn, anything else?"

The man shook his head before looking Shin directly in the eyes. "I should mention that once you learn the first form of Moon breathing you will be on your own until you pass Final Selection, I will not be able to interfere with anything unless it's serious."

Shin's eyes opened a bit hearing this, it wasn't the fact that he wouldn't help him at all but due to his self-proclaimed relative leaving him alone with no one to watch over him, but that thought quickly went away with his next words.

"I may not be here but I will be constantly watching you, don't do anything you would regret."

Shin silently sighed and nodded his head. 'I guess I have to train for this Final Selection thing.'

Shin was going to ask something else but when he looked up, his relative was already walking away through the masses of gore to the exit.

Shin walked after him after looking at Yaiba's corpse one last time.

Running out of the orphanage Ram held Rem's arm tight as she made a beeline towards the forest.

Rem struggled to hold back her tears, her eyes red. "Nee-sama we have to go back!"

Ram looked at her younger sister, she understood, she really did, but Yaiba gave his life for them to escape and she wasn't going to waste it.

"Rem stop it! We can't go back or his sacrifice would have been for nothing!"

Rem knew she was right but she didn't want to think that way. "B-but he could still be alive!"

Rem didn't believe her own words so of course her elder sister wouldn't believe her either, before Ram could protest even further a bang went off in the direction of the orphanage.

"Rem we don't have time for this we have to run, now!" Ram wasn't taking no for an answer and ran with her sister in tow.

After running for hours Ram let go of her sister's arm, Rem had already calmed down a while ago and now had a slightly determined look on her face.

Ram smiled seeing this and sat down under a tree, all that running was hurting her legs.

Without saying anything Rem moved over to her and sat next to Ram.

"My, my, what do we have here?" an oldish voice questioned.

In front of the twins an old man came from the forest, he was a very short, elderly man with visible forehead wrinkles and large, slanted eyes, as well as a straight scar with even six prongs running along his right cheekbone.

He had notably bushy eyebrows and a large mustache, as well as slick white hair that he wore smoothed down to puff out around the base of his head, with what would've been a fringe also swept back away from his face. He was also missing his right leg.

He also wore a jinbei styled kimono with a yellow-brown base color and a pale triangle pattern, He also carried a thick wooden cane with him which seemed to support his body due to age and his missing leg.

Ram was quickly upset, she finally got a break and now had to run again, but the safety of her sister was more important than her discomfort.

Before Ram could even move the old man lifted his hand. "Stay calm, I'm not here to hurt you"

"Then what do you want?"

The old man put on a confident smile. "To get you out of here"
