CHAPTER TWO

Michael's POV

I had a very hectic day. By the way, I am Michael and I am twenty four years old. I work for the most notorious mafia society. My step father is the mafia boss. I grew up in the mafia so basically, I am a mafia. Currently, I work undercover at a countryside college as a lecturer. About my hectic day, I had to get my boys to clean up some mess that was made on the highway. And I still had to check every necessary thing but this night, I want to sleep. I need it badly.

I woke up the next morning to the call of Jeff. My step dad's right hand man. Why would he call me this morning?

"Get your ass here right now!"

I didn't ask further questions as I knew that was his no nonsense voice. We never liked each other since I went to live with my step dad seven years ago. I do wonder why my mom married him but still he took care of me quite well. I took a quick shower and went to Jeff's office. He told me my attention is needed by Carl. I guess part of the reason I disliked him was the way he always used step dad's first name like he was letting me know he had known him longer than I do. I walked to his office and knocked.

"Come in."

"Good morning boss. You called for me." I had a dark pair of goggles on all through but I could still read his facial expression clearly. He looked like he could kill me immediately. Did I do something wrong? I try thinking about it but nothing was coming to my brain. Step dad stood from his chair and walked up to me. He slapped me across both cheeks. Then, he retorted angrily at me;

"I gave you one job and that was to retrieve a file that contained some very important document and you messed it up."

"Sir, I don't know what you are talking about. My boys retrieved the file and I had it sent to you immediately. The instruction was to bring it without opening it."

"Oh! You are saying I am lying… I am wrong to give you instructions now…"

"No boss. I wouldn't dare to."

"I don't care how you do it. You are my step son and I have taken care of you far more than your biological father ever will. Three days Michael, three days or your head will be separated from that neck of yours. And you are lucky because it's a quick death." he took a file from his table and threw it at me.

"That is the file your boys brought to me. I opened to check it and it was blank pages of papers that I found inside. What is the meaning of this? These guys have some serious explaining to do.

For the very first time in seven years, I really felt like weeping. He just spoke about my real father when he knew what I had been through and how traumatized it makes me feel. I got no choice so I just reply him with a yes sir and left. I opened the door to see Jeff coming in too. I wasn't suspicious of him because I knew that wasn't his style of doing things. Besides he still feared Carl to that extent of not passing boundaries.

When I got back to Beninville, I made sure I called my boys together and asked them which two brought the file in. Matthew and Brian claim to be the ones.

"Did any of you open the file yesterday?"

"No yes." They answered in unison. I just noticed Matthew has his right eye wrapped with a bandage.

"Why the hell are you wearing that on your eye? You feel like going blind?"

"No sir. I was hit in the eye with a stone." Matthew replied quickly.

"What are you talking about matt? I told you clearly no one was there."

"Then how did I get hit in the eyes you fool."

"Quiet!" I shouted angrily.

"Let me understand this clearly. Someone threw a stone at you? And you expect me to believe your absolute nonsense? Is this the best you could come up with? Damn it! Diego"

"Yes sir!"

"Take this two to the dungeon. Torture them till they talk. I want to know who that file went to."

"Sir, what are you talking about?" Diego asked me and I smiled coldly before answering him.

"The file that was sent over was faked. No, it was empty. I want to know everything they know and I won't tolerate further questioning."

It was about two hours later when I went to the underground prison. I think it was time to hear what they have to say. I walked down the stairs into the prison. They had been beaten so that they now have bruises all over. They went quiet when they saw me walking. Everyone in the room saluted me. I walked to a chair and sat on it.

"Now, are you ready to tell me what you know because I am so ready to listen? What did you do with the document?"

"Boss, we honestly didn't do anything to the file. We brought it exactly the way it was and we followed your order and took it to the chairman. Please we know nothing sir," cried Matthew profusely.

"Sir, we are speaking the truth. Why would we dare lie to you? When we got the file, I remember now, I remember what happened yesterday now." Said Brian with his facial expression showing he clearly just remembered something. My face gave him the expression that I was waiting for him to speak up.

"When we retrieve the file, we wanted to enter our car when a stone hit matt on the eyes. He threw the file towards the direction the stone came from and I went to pick it up. I swear, I checked and didn't see anybody. I only picked the file and came to you sir."

"Do you take me for a fool? Do you actually want me to believe that ridiculous story?" I yelled at them.

"Please, we will do anything. We will find it. Please don't kill us. We are saying truth." They were pleading together.

The truth is, I trusted my boys. I knew when they were lying and when they weren't. I trained them myself. So that means I had to start looking from the scene.

"Let them go." I said.

" The stuffs we brought in from the scene, they are still around. Start with that. I want to know everything in the trunks of every car, everyone at the scene and anyone that is missing now!"

"Yes sir!"

I knew this day was going to be more stressful than yesterday. I had less than three days else I would die. I knew my step dad wasn't joking when he said he would separate my head from my neck. I decided to go join the guys. I hadn't let them dispose off the bodies from yesterday scene. I always made sure they were refrigerated for a few days before disposing them off. I never could tell why I do that.

I checked through the bodies. Then, I checked the items that had been collected from their cars and their IDs. Everything tallies except for the soldiers. They weren't allowed proper identities when they started the journey I guess. They couldn't risk been recognized. They only wore their uniform so they could pass through the roads without risk of been stopped. I kept on checking until I got to some boxes. I had it opened and I checked through only to see some books and some old fashioned clothes of some teenage girl. I called Diego to ask who own them.

"Sir, we only found it in one of the damaged cars we pulled out yesterday. We have not been able to identify the owner. There was no teenage girl among the corpses."

"And why am I only informed now?" I yelled.

"I am sorry boss. You were busy all through yesterday," I kind of calm down.

"Go to the bus station and bring me the list of everyone that travelled from there. I want to know them and anyone that escaped yesterday. I want it now."

"Yes boss."
