“Look, the birds are retreating!” Aisha cried, relieved to see the water has stopped rising.

The metallic birds regressed into their old forms and flew away in flocks. Everyone was glad that this finally is over. Now the water has stopped coming in and receded gradually. More rescue teams arrived with boats and rescue planes, raking their torch lights around looking for survivors.

“I hope Mali’s okay.” Lukah sighed. “Wonder where he is at.”

“The only way to find out is to find him, after the water recedes.” Judah slumped into an armchair nearby. Jade could tell that Judah was still stewing about something, either Romey or the blitz. Nothing could hide from her eyes, even the most imperceptible changes in tones or expressions. She had a natural flair for discernment. Quietly, she padded over and sat on the arm of the chair.
