"Why are you doing this?" River glared at Arlo and her sister. Her fiancé held a gun, directed at her head. It was very obvious that he was going to kill her.
However, there was no fear in River's eyes, all she felt was hatred, and… anger. Unadulterated fury. She was enraged by the audacity of these two people.
"I am sorry, River, it has to end like this," Arlo said, his voice was cold, but River knew him better to notice that he was quite reluctant.
If he really was going to shoot her, she would have died by now, instead of having this meaningless conversation. After all, their intention was crystal clear; to get rid of her, because she was just a stupid obstacle in their raunchy affair.
The three of them were standing on this old bridge, in Aspen city. This place was very quiet. A perfect place to kill someone and drown them in the water flowing beneath. The river down there was quite deep. Even ships used to cross these waters because of how wide and deep this river was. Not so far from here, there was a big factory.
"You don't feel sorry, Arlo." River chuckled. She was exceptionally aloof, as if she didn't care what was going to happen to her. But the anger rushing in her veins was pure and raw. Her black hair fluttered in the wind. "Don't fool yourself."
"Stop wasting our time! Kill her!" Aubrey hissed at Arlo.
Her little sister was just like how River remembered her, a bitch through and through.
"If you are really dying to kill me, why aren't you the one pulling the trigger?" River taunted her, she glanced over her shoulder briefly, calculating her next move. These two idiots would pay for this betrayal!
Arlo was her fiancé for five years, they worked together in the underground company that belonged to River's father, while Aubrey was her half sibling from her father's second marriage.
River had this nagging feeling about their relationship for the last two years, but she always brushed it off. Thanks to them succeeding in being very secretive and it was stupid of her not to trust her gut feeling and investigate the truth.
River gathered all the information on prominent figures in this country, she knew their dirty deals and all the women they had affairs with, but she failed to see this affair that had been 'flourishing' right under her nose. Irony of life…
"Do you think I don't dare?!" Aubrey roared, it was always very easy to mess with her mind and incite her rage. "So, you know, I am pregnant with Arlo's baby!" She smirked smugly, as if she had won a medal.
"Congratulations!" River clapped her hands, she flicked her long hair, as a gesture to mock Aubrey. "Should I bring blue balloons or pink balloons?"
Aubrey was visibly upset because she couldn't get a rise out of River. "You don't need to bring anything, you are going to die!" And then she remembered something. "Do you know why Arlo chose me over you?"
"Why? Because you have bigger boobs?" River blinked her eyes innocently, winking at Aubrey's breasts.
"Because you are barren! You can't give him a child!"
"Ouch." That was a low blow, because that was true. Medically speaking, she couldn't have a child, but she still had a way to strike back. "Are you sure she is pregnant with your child? She can mess with you behind my back, are you sure that she is not messing around behind your back?"
Her counter was not as scathing as Aubrey's harsh words, but it was enough to infuriate her while Arlo looked doubtful. River knew that Arlo was second guessing his decision to kill her, because he wouldn't stand there quietly without doing anything.
He was a swift and calculative man, he wouldn't stand there, watching them have this meaningless bickering.
"Shut up, you bitch!" Aubrey was livid, she was seeing red and grabbed the gun in Arlo's hand. She was going to shoot River, just like how she wanted her to.
River was alert, she pushed her too far and now her only way to survive this was to jump into the river, but when she turned around and got ready to jump, a muffled sound of shotgun pierced the peaceful night as excruciating pain shot through River's entire being, before her body fell into the water.
And the last thing that she heard was Arlo's voice, screaming at Aubrey.
"What have you done?!"
"You agreed to kill her!"
That was the last thing that River heard before her ears started ringing and her body turned very weak, the water was very cold and she couldn't breathe, neither could she see her surroundings clearly, everything was so dark.
River tried to move, she needed to swim to safety, but she couldn't. Her body was drowning.
She was going to die.
And when she thought that was it. That was how her life was going to end, in the hands of her fiancé and her half sibling, suddenly there was this glaring light, and everything around her became so bright as the pain subsided, only to be replaced by this weird feeling.
Her body felt so hot!
River tried to open her eyes and found that she was inside a hotel room. A fancy one at that.
"Wh- what is going on?" River blinked her eyes, her breathing was rapid, this weird feeling crawled on her skin, she felt so hot. "Where am I?"
"Get out of here!"
River was startled when someone screamed suddenly, prompting her to turn around and she saw Ranon Leighton.
She knew him, who didn't? He was a hot topic in this country. He was a young businessman, who managed to revive his family's business from the verge of bankruptcy and made the company's worth increase several times over.
But, why was she with him in this fancy hotel room when she was sure she was going to die in that river?
"Get out of here!" Ranon roared again.
