Chapter 17: Hiccup’s Bravery

I rush into the shop and see a giant black tail swinging around wildly. We hear Helga walking up to the shop window and I motion for him to distract her. He jumps out of the window and begins to talk to her while I work on the latch connecting boy wonder to his dragon friend. I manage to get them unstuck just before toothless pulls him back into the shop. They rush off and I come face to face with Helga.

She asks, "What's up with that brother of yours?" I shrug my shoulders and continue on my nightly jog.

The next morning, father and the rest of the sailing crew return from their failed voyage in burned and broken boats. I see father walking on the dock and everyone rushes to congratulate him.

He walks up to me and asks, "What happened?"

I respond with,"With Hiccup? He started doing good with the dragon training. He's a natural at it. It's like he knows exactly what a dragons weak points are and how to use them to his advantage."

That night, I see hiccup sneaking back into the house with his hair all singed and slicked back. I give him a small chuckle and mess with his hair to try and get it back to normal. He pushes my hand away and heads to his workstation in Gobbers shop. After a few minutes, I see father walking towards the workstation. I send a prayer to the gods and head out for my nightly run. The next morning the final training day arrives and hiccup once again takes down the dragon and Helga loses her shit. Gobber pulls the two towards him and holds his hook over Helga and looks toward the elder. She shakes her head and Gobber then points his hand at Hiccup. The elder nods her head with a smile and the villagers begin to yell and cheer.

Helga leaves to head off into the forest in frustration. After the celebration, I see hiccup head off into the forest holding a basket of fish. A few hours later, I spot toothless flying toward the safe haven. I hear hiccup a few minutes later enter from the back door and head to his room.

The next morning we head toward the arena to fight the monstrous nightmare. I can faintly hear fathers speech but I choose to ignore it. Instead, I head into the arena waiting area to find Helga and Astrid wishing Hiccup good luck. They notice me and decide to leave and give us time to talk.

I walk up to my brother and ask, "Do you have a plan for toothless?"

He shakes his head and I say, "Good luck then. I'll try and help, but you know how stubborn father can be."

We hear father shout, "Today, he becomes one of us!"

Gobber walks by and says, "It's time, Hiccup. Knock 'em dead."

He looks back at me and nods and puts on the helmet that father gave him. He then walks into the arena and heads toward the weapon rack. He grabs a shield and faces the cage door.

He takes a deep breath and says, "I'm ready."

The door slowly opens and a ball of fire bursts out. The monstrous nightmare rushes out of its cage and begins to crawl across the wall. It shoots a stream of fire at the audience and begins to scale the chain ceiling. It serves its surroundings and notices hiccup. It drops to the floor and begins to crawl toward him. Hiccup, instead of fighting it like a Viking, decides to drop his weapon and shield. He walks backward with his hand outstretched to try and calm the dragon down. He throws his helmet down and moves his hand forward.

Father swings his hammer on the metal, scaring the dragon and causing it to go berserk. I grab the wooden gate and pull it from the stone wall. The monstrous nightmare catches hiccup and pins him to the ground. I rush in to try and protect hiccup, but before I get to him toothless shoots a plasma blast at the metal bars surrounding the arena. The dragon dives in and begins to attack the monstrous nightmare. Toothless stands between the opposing dragon and hiccup protecting him. The Vikings, seeing the night fury, rush in to try and slay it. Father is the first to reach toothless and gets pinned to the ground.

Father glares at toothless and says, "Put it with the others."

He then drags hiccup to our home and I follow after the Vikings to "help" handle the friendly dragon.

After a few minutes father yells, "Ready the ships!"

The other Vikings follow his orders and a fleet of Viking ships are ready in only a hour. I see the other Vikings struggling to try and restrain toothless in a sort of harness. They manage to get him restrained and move him to father's ship.

Father yells, "Set sail!"

I watch as father sails off with the rest of the warrior Vikings. I faintly hear Helga ask hiccup a couple of questions and a few seconds later he runs off. Helga and Astrid follow after him, but not me. Instead of following him I head to the safe haven. Before I head there I decide to stop by my room and grab my axe. On my way there I decide to look at my stats.

Quickly looking over my stats I dodge a hanging branch and pop up into a sprint. While I'm running I take out a talent cigar and light it. I take a deep breath in and expect the terrible taste of tobacco, but instead I am met with the taste of caramel and peanut butter. I am surprised by the taste and while destructed I get smacked in the face by another hanging branch. Rolling to my feet I begin to jump over rocks, knocked over trees, and ditches. A few minutes later I finally reach the safe haven and I stop to quickly admire its beauty.

Finished with admiring the scenery, I say with a smile, "I think it's about time to make a friend of my own."
