Chapter 95

Philip and his siblings were in the sunroom when I returned from seeing the last guest out. I’d just settled down in a chair when Steve and Roger appeared, so I said, “What’s up, guys?”

“We’re headed to Lenox to fill in for two guys at the car wash who have to leave early,” Roger said.

“Have fun,” Philip said. “Don’t forget we’re grilling steaks by the pool this evening.”

“Save a couple for us, Uncle Philip,” Steve said, and they exited the room.

“Where’s Gran?” I said. “And for that matter, where are the girls?”

“The girls are in their room watching television, and Mrs. Barnett went to her room,” Marie said. “She said she needed a nap, but I think she just wanted us to have some time together.”

“That would be totally in character for her,” I said. “Maybe I should go take a nap.”

“Not on your life,” Philip said. “Like it or not, you’re part of this family.”

“What time will the boys be home?” Marie said.
