Chapter 3

Jan 6th, 2019

For the first time ever Jennie actually dreaded meeting Jamie today. Of course they had talked over the whole year. It was this year that Jamie was moving back here and she would well go away.

Though that isn't what made her apprehensive. Letting out a shaky breathe she gathered all her things and headed to The Groove.

Jamie sat fidgeting with his book. He had read the same paragraph three times and still hasn't absorbed any information about it whatsoever.

He took off his glasses in frustration and rubbed his eyes. The book was dropped on the table and he sighed.

Something was wrong and he could feel it.

It had been another shitty year without Jennie, and another year with these growing feelings that Jamie refused to acknowledge.

Him and Jennie would call each other every day but now it's been reduced to about once a week. If he was lucky maybe twice. That would mean that he only got around +/- 52 calls a year and not their regular +/- 365 and that didn't sit right with him.

He glanced at his watch and surely Jennie walked in through the door. She was wearing shorts and a tank top today with her hair in a ponytail.

Hmm... That's odd. Jennie always wore extravagant clothing on their birthday. She believed that even if people didn't know it was her birthday, she could at least shine brighter than a star on her special day.

Jamie smirked and leaned back in his chair.

"No designer clothes?"

"No sense of personality?"

Something inside him died when she just sat down and didn't embrace him in her ever so lasting warm hugs that would always make him feel at home. Quickly covering up his disappointment. He chuckled and as usual they would get their regular order from Mrs Wentworth.

For the first time ever, there was awkward silence between Jennie and Jamie. The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Jennie took a sip for her milkshake and Jamie cleared his throat.

"So... What have you been up to. We don't talk that much anymore."

"Oh yeah... Sorry about that. I've been quite busy lately and didn't really have much time to talk."

She's always busy these days.

Jennie fidgeted with her fingers in her lap. For some reason she felt as though she was under interrogation. It's not like she was doing anything wrong... Right?

"So how's the microbiology course going?"

If possible a spark ignited in her eyes and starter up a flame of joy. She began to wordlessly ramble all about her course to Jamie and he just sat there patiently and listened.

Slowly but surely the awkward tension seemed to disappear as she talked.

"... And so Proffesor Windsor said that since me and Ashton get along very well and we should be in the group project together."

Ashton?

The name suddenly piqued Jamie's interest. Who the hell was Ashton?

"Ashton?"

He cut her off mid sentence and she looked at him weirdly. She shook the look off and proceeded to explain who Ashton was.

"He's really funny and sweet. He's really smart too and once when he asked me what's my opinion of flowers I told him what I told you... Do you remember? "

Of course he remembers after watching Jennie set a bouquet of roses on fire after some boy at school gave them to her on Valentines day.

I thought that she had done it for amusement but apparently there's a reason behind it.

Jennie hates flowers because they always die. And something about why should people destroy the earth beauty just for a temporary feeling of happiness.

The only bouquet of flowers that she ever accepted was when she was provided with substantial proof that the flower was replanted and well cared for.

I thought she was absolutely mental but now that quirk seemed so adorable now.

Jamie nodded along to Jennie's question and she continued talking.

"So for a couple of weeks he took origami classes and made me a whole bouquet from paper!"

She sounded so excited. Why was he agitated about that? He hated the spark she had in her eyes when she spoke about this supposed 'Ashton'.

She continued talking about other ventures she and 'Ashton' went on together and his anger just kept accumulating. At some point he snapped and slammed his hand on the table which startled Jennie.

Jamie didn't even bother apologizing before he blurted out the words.

"Promise me something..."

Jennie was completely dumbfounded at the sudden outburst from him but decided to go along with it.

Had she done something wrong?

"What?"

"Promise me that we'll always be Jennie and Jamie..."

She tilted her head to the side and lifted a brow in confusion.

"Jennie and Jamie?"

"Against the world..."

"Huh?"

The thrust his elbow onto the table and stuck out his pinky finger. His eyes locked with her and he held her gaze.

"Promise me."

She scoffed slightly before smirking. She interlocked their fingers together.

"I promise that we will always be Jennie and Jamie against the world..."

He sealed it with their thumbs before leaning back in his chair. Jennie smiled.

"You know I still love you right?"

Jamie scoffed and rolled his eyes. Although it didn't seem like it... Hearing that phrase was like an ice cold glass of water on a hot day.

Refreshing.

And for now... That was enough for him.
