Chapter 39: Deep Reflection

Over the next three nights, the Victorian farmhouse fills up. Vampires from all over the world arrive at all hours of the night. Some arrive by car and some seem to appear out of thin air. They arrive alone and they arrive with blood companions.

I hustle during the day, charading with the mortal visitors to see what they need.

Out of six companions, only two speak English, a dark-haired, quiet woman from the Islands of the Hebrides and a boisterous Brazilian boy in his early twenties. Luckily, the boy, Dante, is a whiz with languages. Speaking in Spanish, Portuguese, and French, he helps me translate food preferences.

Food, it turns out, is very important to blood companions. The 1930s kitchen is always bustling and steaming with amazing smells. I order loads of groceries from Virginia who’s only too delighted to see the house full to the brim with so many people.
