Gayle ran into the woods without looking back. She let the tears fall as she heard Melody's battle cry as she attempted to fight off the vampires. Gayle covered her ears and continued running.
Finally, she reached the cabin, hidden deep in the woods. The door was locked, but Gayle found the spare key in a hole in a nearby tree. She rushed inside and was pulled into a hug by Aurora.
"You made it. I am so glad you are safe. I didn't mean to leave. Your father ushered me away. Everything happened so quickly," Aurora apologized and began looking Gayle over. "Are you hurt?"
"Momma, Melody, she…"
"Where is Melody? I sent her to get you. Is she behind you?"
"Melody," Gayle swallowed, trying to keep from bursting into tears again. "Melody didn't make it. She helped me get away."
