The Couple Next Door

Skylars POV

I woke with a start, I had forgotten to dig out the wired fan I brought, my oscillating one. I realized that, grumbling and rolling over listening to insistent knocking.

"Who the fuck could it be at this time in the morning?" I snapped and grabbed my phone looking angrily at the time and realized it was 12:43 close to almost one in the afternoon.

I rolled out of bed and tried to look around for clothes all the while listening to the annoying knocking.

"Give me a minute!" I yelled out and grumble pissed off at this point, I couldn't find any of my clothes at the moment, so I had to answer the door with what I passed out last night in; short blood-red tank top, and dark blue jean shorts.

I glared at the front door as I marched up to it, and without even fixing my hair, my hand grabs the doorknob saying, "Yes?" as I open the door.

I let out a tiny gasp, as I am met with a dark-haired woman, with a belly shirt on, dark leggings, and long black high heels. She hung on to the arm of a man who looked really handsome, and oddly familiar.

I look him over as well, he was wearing light grey sweatpants and a loose t-shirt, his lips sat nicely on his face, and his nose was a nice complimentary size, but what stood out to me the most was his eyes. My eyes widened, 'Please don't let this be who I think it is.' I pleaded inside my head, begged.

If it is. I'm fucked.

The woman clears her throat bringing my eyes to meet her striking big green ones, "Hello! My name is Amelia and this is my fiance Kade! We just wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood! " My eyes flew to what I now know who to be, Kade, standing just at my new doorstep.

I tried not to let the embarrassment I was now feeling show on my face, but I knew I failed when I met Kade's eyes, his lips went up into the slightest of smirks that only I was able to catch.

I looked away quickly and composed myself, "Thank you very much, Amelia. My name is Skylar Carter and thank you but I have lived here before, this is actually my old childhood home." I explained and watched her frown a little, causing her to lose her smile.

"Oh really? How long ago would that be?" She side-glanced at Kade and watched him stiffen a little.

"About my whole life. I lived here from when I was born to when I turned fourteen, and then I had to move, and now under unfortunate circumstances, I'm back." My eyes automatically went to Kades at the end of the sentence.

I looked away before any emotion could pass between us, and smiled at Amelia who seemed to lose her humor, catching me glancing at Kade.

"Do you two know each other, or go to school together?" She smiled, or tried to, she grimaced, stopped trying to pretend a smile and let the corners of her lips drop.

I nodded my head slowly, dumbfounded, but not letting it show, "Yes, actually to both. We grew up as infants together, then childhood best friends. But then I moved so yeah, we aren't best friends anymore." I stated dryly and pursed my lips together.

Amelia is full-out stone cold staring at me now, "Oh, that's cool. So this is for you, Skylar." She practically shoves whatever she made me, into my hands and she pulls Kade away.

"Alright, it's time to go." She says and huffs, seeing he doesn't want to leave at first, him not moving an inch. But then reluctantly seems to cave, and walks away without sparing me another glance.

I watch as a knot forms in my stomach as I watch her tow him around, like a basic lapdog. I scoffed and tried not to be hurt at him just willingly letting her pull him away, but what was I to expect, he was practically married, for being engaged for six years.

I walk back inside and close the door, and lock it. I walk back into my room and grabbed my phone. I made sure to program my phone with Kade's number saving it as him, finally.

To Kade:

Hey. Are you there?

I sigh and click my phone, closing it. I then put it face down on my bed, waiting for the answer. I get up and go to some of the boxes and opened it, seeing all my clothes finally. "Alfred got it mixed it," I mused to myself and opened up the big six drawer bureau they had of bright light wood. I ended up putting away all my clothes, and unpacking all my bathroom essentials.

Once I put my mind to it, I convinced myself to actually unpack everything I brought and organise everything, just to put my mind at ease. But when I was done, I was not at ease, my back hurt and felt like it was being snapped in half. My head pounded and hurt and my legs burned from all the semi-crunches I had done to unpack.

I had collapsed on my bed once again exhausted and satisfied with my work, I ended up taking the TV off the wall in the living room. I thought it would get much more use, as I like to listen to music or watch some movies to help me fall asleep. So, I put the tv on the wall opposite my bed, up above my new bureau.

I dared shakily to pick up my phone and turn it around to see my lock screen, and gulped seeing a message on it that read:

From Kade:

Yeah, I am.

What's up?

My fingers typed of their own accord and before I knew it I had sent it:

To Kade:

Why did you leave?

I regretted it, a little. But on the other hand, I was hopeful and also a little inquisitive. I got my answer in a swift ding.

From Kade:

Because Amelia wanted me to.

He said it so simply, but I felt a little hurt by it, and why wouldn't I? But why would I? I'm nobody to him. We were bestfriends once before, but no longer, so I shouldn't be surprised, my hands shakily type their response:

To Kade:

Okay

I gulped and was surprised when I was about ready to swipe out of the conversation, I heard the phone sound his reply:

From Kade:

I'm sorry. I wanted to hang out with you Skye. I could just sense Amelia was getting uncomfortable.

I stared at the message a moment, smiling softly and only a little before typing my reply:

To Kade:

It's okay Kade, really. I'm going to go take a nap and possibly sleep till night. We can talk tomorrow about getting together.

I didn't really think about my choice of words, and thought nothing of it, as I clicked my phone shut and threw the gift Amelia gave me in the trash. It was cherry pie, one of the pies I detest most in this world.

I didn't mean anything by it, I just didn't like it, at all and knew I wouldn't be able to eat it, not even a little bite.

I collapsed back onto the bed, not yet set up the curtains on the windows, so the sun poked through and almost blinded me, as I turned around and snuggled into my soft plush pillows, and trying and failing miserably at a nap for the longest time. Eventually, I was able to drift off into a dreamless sleep.
