"Criss!" Calla screamed. She reached out her hand frantically as if she could pull him from the certain fall, as their island rose higher.

The river shattered from its core below, and water poured like a fountain down into the abyss. Criss had nothing to stand on now, his large legs were wriggling on air.

Ackledge, frantic, rushed to the edge of the boat, shouting orders, though his voice was mainly drowned by the rising chaos. "Get him out of there!"

Spheris was still holding the boat, his legs on the rising land while Criss was struggling in the air. The boat tilted dangerously as Criss clung to it, his massive frame barely able to hold on as the island rose higher and higher.

Their eyes met.
